Ireland's Katie Taylor has won a gold medal at the Women's European Union Championships in Hungary.

Taylor defeated her Bulgarian opponent Denica Eliseeva 16-1 in the 60kg (lightweight) final.

It is the third-consecutive EU Gold medal for Taylor and comes ahead of the forthcoming World Championships.

The win ensured that the 2008 AIBA World female boxer of the year has now claimed two AIBA World titles, four European golds and three European Union golds in the last six years.

Taylor, who had her dad and coach Peter and Zuar Antia working her corner in Keszthely, scored 37 points en route to gold in Hungary and conceded five in four contests.

Peter Taylor said: 'Katie came out here to prepare for next month's World Championahips in Barbados and we're delighted with her performance.

'She was always in control in the final and we delighted with the win.'

Taylor was part of a four strong Irish squad in Hungary which included Allana Murphy, Debbie Rogers and Sinead Kavanagh.

IABA Director of boxing Dominic O'Rourke added: 'We were very pleased with the performances of the entire squad. They gave it 100% out here. They represented their country with pride and we can't ask for anymore than that.'

it is an awful pity for her that womens boxing is amateur, as she would make a fortune. well done Katie
