The divorce confirmation was posted on Woods' website

Ms Nordegren's law firm released a statement confirming the divorce after the couple attended a court hearing today in Florida.

"We are sad that our marriage is over and we wish each other the very best for the future," the statement said.

"While we are no longer married, we are the parents of two wonderful children and their happiness has been, and will always be, of paramount importance to both of us."

Lawyers for the two confirmed that the divorce became official on Monday in Bay County Circuit Court, Florida.

The divorce comes nine months after Woods had an early morning car crash outside their home near Orlando.

Publicity from the mysterious incident set off explosive revelations that the world's No. 1 golfer had been cheating on his wife.

A stream of alleged lovers of the golf star appeared in the media, including one woman who lived close by the couple in Florida.

One salacious claim of infidelity was the release of an alleged message Woods left for a mistress pleading with her to change her answerphone recording after Ms Nordegren suspected his infidelity.

Allegation of affairs came from numerous states across America, and included claims of one lover travelling to Australia to be with him during a tour.

The scandal shocked fans of the golf star, who had carefully nurtured a wholesome image who protected his personal privacy.

The fall in public standing led Woods to lose millions of dollars in endorsements and taking five months away from the game.

Some observers believed Woods' behaviour was a repeat of the philandering ways of his late father, Earl Woods.

Terms of the couple's divorce were not disclosed, except that they will share parenting of their children, Sam Alexis, 3, and Charlie Axel, 1.

Woods and Nordegren wed in Barbados in 2004 and it is believed the former model carefully renegotiated her pre-nup agreement after the sex scandals became known.

Divorce lawyer Vanessa Lloyd Platt told Sky News that there will be a confidentiality clause gagging Ms Nordegren from revealing the settlement she receives from his estimated £700m fortune.

"The rumours are bouncing around and the smart thinking is that Elin will receive a settlement into the early £100m, not half of his £1 billion," she said.

"One of the primary things that drove this was all of the sponsors that were getting nervous especially after his performances recently," she said.

It is believed Woods' on-course performance deteriorated after the pair started leading separate lives.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that Ms Nordegren may now move back to her native Sweden.

Richard Lenton, former editor of Golf Punk, told Sky News that the move may hamper Woods' shaky return to form after his disastrous recent performances.

"It's going to be a mammoth schedule for him flying to Sweden because of his non-stop golf commitments," Lenton said.

as long as he keeps his mouth and trousers shut (and wallet open) elin will be happy. imagine splitting up because your sponsors dont think that you can put in the performances while trying to sort out your life. at least it looks that way to me
