An investigation is under way following a fatal shooting in which three people, including a member of the gardaí, were shot dead in Omeath Co Louth this evening.

Two of the deceased were members of the same family.

It is understood the incident happened when gardaí were called to a house in the village after 6pm this evening.

The area has been sealed off and the state pathologist has been notified.

It is believed members of the gardaí were responding to a call in relation to a domestic incident.

The scene has been preserved pending a forensic examination

Gardaí are investigating an incident in Co Louth this evening during which a member of the gardaí and at least one other person were shot dead.

It is understood the shootings took place after gardaí responded to a domestic dispute at a house on the Cooley Peninsula near Carlingford just after 6pm.

Members from Omeath Garda Station arrived at the scene, shots were fired and a garda was fatally injured. A second man was also shot dead during the incident.

The garda shot dead was a father of three, aged in his 30s.

In a statement this evening gardaí confirmed one of the two men that died was an on duty garda. They said a woman was seriously injured in the incident. She has been taken to hospital.

The scene has now been preserved pending a forensic examination and the arrival of a state pathologist.

The shooting happened only a few miles from the scene in which Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe was fatally shot on 25 January 2013.

Fine Gael TD for Louth, Fergus O'Dowd, described news of the shooting as devastating and said his heart and prayers go out to the family and friends concerned.

Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Justice Niall Collins said in a statement "Our thoughts are with all members of An Garda Siochána, our Fire and Ambulance personnel and the families of all those affected at this time."

Sinn Féin Leader and Louth TD Gerry Adams also extended his sympathies to the families of those who have died.

Just read this elsewhere, very sad, as is any loss of life in such circumstances. There's more to come in this story I imagine.
