Advanced Format disks are hard disks that use a new form of sector formatting that increases sector sizes to exceed the conventional 512 to 520 bytes per sector. Advanced Format technologies use sector sizes of 4,096 bytes, which is more efficient for storing large files such as the big graphic and video files that are popular today. It also allows for stronger error correction algorithms to be used. Microsoft recently released an update for Windows 7 that supports better compatibility with Advanced Format disks.
