Water - Many have been without water since St Stephen's Day

Thousands of households across the country will be without water or face serious restrictions in the days ahead.
The restrictions have been introduced in order to restore reservoir levels in the worst affected areas.

Local authorities are mobilising crews to fix burst water mains caused by the thaw.
In the capital, Dublin City Council is sending water tankers to areas with limited water supplies.
The Council said there will be widespread water restrictions from 6pm this evening until 12pm tomorrow.

Many residents have been without water since the thaw began on St Stephen's Day.
The local authorities in Dublin are closely monitoring water levels in reservoirs on a regular basis and adapting supplies accordingly, but say the rapid thaw has led to the loss of 130 million litres in storage.

Members of the public are urged to report leaks to 01 679 6186.

Other areas across the country badly affected include parts of counties Cork, Clare, Limerick, Laois and Offaly.

Clare County Council has said water supplies will be cut off in a number of areas as demand is exceeding supply. An emergency number - 087 4169496 - will be in operation from 5pm this evening until 9.30am tomorrow.
Water tankers will be in operation at various locations around the county.

Laois County Council says there is major disruption to water supplies, especially in Portlaoise, Portarlington and Mountmellick, and water tankers are available at a number of locations.

Kilkenny City Council says there is low pressure in many of the high areas of the city. It says it has made water available between 10am and 4pm at Gaol Road, Outside No 53/54 the Sycamores, Outside No 39 Shandon Park, Loughboy - Watershed car park and Glendine Heights.

The city council says that water has been turned off in Ballyragget and it is expected to be back later today, while burst water mains are being repaired in Graiguenamanagh and Callan.

An emergency call centre will operate today and tomorrow from 10am to 5pm on 056-7794145.

Westmeath County Council says water supplies have been restored to Athlone, however repairs are ongoing and supplies could be interrupted during the day without notice. It has made a tanker available at Athlone IT car park and standpipes are available at a number of locations.

Outlets from reservoirs in the Athlone and Mullingar areas will be closed this evening. The county council also says a burst main in Kinnegad has been repaired but there may still be some disruption.

Leitrim County Council is continuing to experience problems with water supplies throughout the county. It says standpipes continue to be available to supply water from 11am to 2pm each day until further notice.

The council has set up a hotline number for people needing urgent assistance on 1890 302 302 or 071 9620005.

In Sligo, demand for water doubled over the past 24 hours in some parts.

The council there have said public adherence to night time restrictions is leading to day time supplies.

Mayo County Council has appealed to people to conserve water as supplies remain under pressure due to the high number of taps which people have left running to avoid freezing pipes.

In Limerick arrangements are being made to provide alternative water supplies to the towns of Abbeyfeale and Newcastle West.

The council said due to a reduction in the amount of storage available in reservoirs, regular night-time restrictions in service can be expected until water levels are restored to normal.

In Kerry, water supplies are critically low and there are restrictions in much of the county, however in Tralee water supply was restored for a number of hours last night but cut off again overnight to allow water levels to rise.

Kerry County Council says it has 25 crews working to identify burst pipes and the areas worst affected include Kenmare Cahersiveen and Ballinskelligs in the south of the County.

Local authorities, including Kildare County Council and Cork City Council, are providing water at various locations throughout the day.

Offaly County Council has said that water may be shut off at any time to facilitate repairs and maintain reservoir levels. There are particular problems with the water supply for Tullamore.

Water tankers are available at a number of locations in the town until 4pm today as well as a other locations throughout the county.

The Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government has asked property owners to check their premises for leaks.

It has also asked members of the public to report evidence of leaks on public mains to local authorities.

Meanwhile, homeowners in Northern Ireland are being urged to conserve water, as the ongoing thaw continues to cause disruption to water supplies in many areas.

A number of reservoirs remain at low levels and Northern Ireland Water says it is trying to recharge the water network and that customers may lose water supplies for a time.

The worst affected areas are in county Antrim - Belfast, Lisburn, Templepatrick, Crumlin, Newtownabbey and Antrim town.

Meanwhile, the North's Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness and the Regional Development Minister Conor Murphy have visited flood-affected homes in Lurgan, Co Armagh.

Residents in the Shankill estate have expressed anger after sewage flooded through their homes early on St Stephen's Day.

It is understood the flood was caused by overflowing drains after snow and ice thawed.

Information from county and city councils on water supply, disruption and restrictions. This will be updated with the latest information as we receive it. (Council website links at the end of the page)

For Northern Ireland Water Updates >> http://www.niwater.com/niwnews.asp

Cork City Council
Demand for water remains high across the City network. City Council crews are working to repair leaks on the mains and property owners are again requested to repair leaks on their properties as quickly as possible. Water supplies should be turned off pending repair of leaks. Customers are advised that leak repair work can give rise to temporary disruption, pressure fluctuations and temporary discolouration.
During the present restrictions all consumers should now be receiving a daily refill supply to their properties. This should be adequate to refill storage tanks during the time of supply. If you are not receiving a water supply the likelihood is that the problem may be internal to your system.
Water Restrictions
In order to maintain supplies, the City Council will continue night restrictions over a number of areas which have very high leakage levels. These are detailed on the attached PDF document.
Supplies will be restricted from 7 p.m. this evening (29th December 2010) and again tomorrow evening (30th December 2010). Supplies will be restored from 10 a.m. each morning and water should begin to return to affected areas from this time. While it will take a number of hours to restore supplies to some of these areas, all such areas will receive sufficient mains supplies each day to refill storage tanks in houses and other buildings. The number of areas affected will reduce as demand returns to normal.
Standpipes
In order to assist householders with supply difficulties, stand pipes remain in place at the following locations:
-Boreenamanna Road (east of the junction of Wallace Avenue
-Deerpark
-Commons Road (Blackpool Church)
-Old Youghal Road (By Collins Barracks)
-Old Youghal Road (by Glenamoy Lawn)
Stand pipes will be operational from 10am to 8pm today (29th December 2010) and from 10am to 8pm tomorrow (30th December 2010).
Householders
Individual householders in areas where water supply has been restored and who do not yet have water supply to their properties should be aware that this may be as a result of:
-Leaks in their service pipe/supply,
-Still frozen pipework or
-Airlocks in the internal distribution system
Cork County Council
Water supply update

While the situation is improving in many areas, there are still severe problems which are being worked on by council staff. Consumers are again asked to use water sparingly and property owners and key holders should check for leaks in unoccupied premises anf shut off the water if necessary

North Cork
Efforts to restore the supply in Mallow received a major setback last night when an ESB transformed blew near the water pumphouse at Dromore. Severe interruptions will continue in all areas except thr town centre. Tankers will continue to supply water daily at Church of the Resurrection & Bowling Green car park from 12.00noon to 4.00pm daily and also at Woodview Drive and Canon Sheehan Place from 12.00 noon to 5.00pm

In relation to Fermoy Water supply it will be at least 2 more days of shut downs before there is enough water to pump to the high tower so that supply can be restored to Baile Ard, Uplands & Strawhall. We have major leaks/bursts through out the town and we have our own crews and private contractors working on repairing them. Water will be back on from 10.00 to 11.30am at Pike Road, including St.Josephs & Rathcarraig.

Water will be turned off in Oliver plunkett Hill (including Beechfield, Mallow road, Rathealy Road at 12.00 mid-day today for 24 hrs. Water will back on at Duntaheen Area today from mid-day until 3.00 p.m. Water will be off in Clondulane from 4.00 p.m today to 9.am. tomorrow The Council has provided tankers supplying water at Baile Ard, Beechfield and at Rathcarrig from 12.00 to 4.00pm daily.

The Allow Supply (which serves Freemount, Dromina, Milford, Liscarroll and surrounding areas). The Freemount reservoir has recovered and supply should be restored to all areas today. Charleville supply also recovered and no further interruptions. Reservoir level has recovered somewhat but still low in Millstreet - further nightly interruptions can be expected. Laugt and Caherbarnagh reservoirs are empty and severe disruptions will continue today.

Kanturk reservoir is very low and it is expected that the supply will be off again tonight. There appears to be a serious problem with vacant premises. Newmarket can also expect some disruptions especially to the higher parts of the town.
South Cork
Inniscarra, Innishannon, Glashaboy are in full production and reservoirs are slowly building. Major leak located and repaired in Cobh yesterday has greatly improved situation there but Cobh demand remains high - pressure reduction will be employed at night but cut-off can hopefully be avoided.
Glanmire area will also have pressure reduction at night for a number of days yet. Macroom remains under significant stress and supply will be cut-off overnight (9pm-9am but may not make it to 9pm tonight). We have breaks in Rylane, Donoughmore and Grenagh that we hope to repair today. Carrigadrohid burst and is shut off-added complication is that it is fed from Macroom.
Myrtleville has been badly affected but we hope to have it resolved today.
West Cork
The water supply situation is still critical throughout the Western Division. Water production is at significantly increased levels, e.g. Glengarriff and Castletownbere WSS's three times last month's average, Clonakilty RWSS up 20%, Skibbereen RWSS up 60%, and Schull Area up 50%.

Water supplies to the following areas had to be curtailed last night to allow reservoirs to build up: Higher areas in Bantry, Ballylickey, Snave, Drimoleague, Rosbrin, Ballydehob, Dunmanway Town, Union Hall, Ringaroga, Sherkin, Ballylinchy & Butlerstown.

Many of these areas may need to be curtailed again tonight, though a significant number of leaks in private premises have been detected, the situation is improving but will remain critical for a number of days yet, possibly weeks in some areas.

There are particular problems on the south side of Bantry in the Gortacloona Area and temporary supplies of drinking water are being provided at Bantry Fire Station from 12.00 noon to 5.00 pm today and over the coming days at the Bantry Area Office.

Consumers are again asked to conserve water and check all unoccupied premises for leaking pipes.

Update from 11.30am
The water supply situation to 12.00am last night was as follows: 28th December 2010 - Production 554.9Mld Demand - 575.8Mld.

This represents a loss of almost 20.9 Mld. Storage at Stillorgan is now down to 532Mld although during the night we did manage to put storage into some of the other reservoirs in the region. We still have a lot of work to do to stabilise the situation. Our crews continue to work on identifying leaks and dealing with burst pipes. We are maintaining our appeal to homeowners and all key holders for businesses, schools etc to check for leaks within their property.

The very restrictive regime will have to continue. As many schools and businesses are still closed for the Christmas period we are again applying restrictions and widespread cut-offs from 6pm this evening the 29th December to 12 noon tomorrow, 30th December.

It should also be noted that there could be loss of supply in other areas at short notice due to broken mains and every effort is being made to advise people of these more localised problems on the website also. Where water supply has been off due to broken mains and these are fixed during the day we will endeavour to alter the restrictions so that they get some water during the evening/night although this will be difficult to achieve in all cases.
We are very mindful of the importance of New Year's Eve to business and we will advise the public and business community of our proposals in that regard tomorrow (30th).

We would ask key holders to return and check their premises to ensure that there in water damage arising from burst pipes.

The areas where water will be cutoff or have pressure reduced are listed below, the shut off or reduction in pressure will last from 6pm (29th) to 12pm (30th).

Update on Restrictions to Fingal Water Supply
Current Water Disruptions: Wednesday 29th December at 11.30am
We have repaired nine watermain leaks over the past three days, however, we are experiencing alot of problems across the network which our staff are dealing with on a daily basis. The water network is more prone to leaks as temperatures rise after the severe cold weather and we will continue to repair leaks as they occur.
Naul, Walshestown, Ballyboghil, and Balrothery: We are still trying to secure the water supply in the reservoirs that serve these areas and as a result customers will have no water until the reservoir levels increase again.
Balbriggan Area: Jordanstown Reservoir is critically low at present and as a result we have had to restrict the water supply to the Balbriggan area from 10am this morning to 10am tomorrow morning(30th).
Garristown Area: We are still trying to secure the water supply in the reservoir following the mechanical fault with the pumps yesterday. We hope to have water restored to the area by late afternoon or early evening.
Water Tanker Locations: Static water tankers are in place at the following locations: Naul Village, Grand Hotel in Malahide and at Casana Estate in Howth.
The water supply has been restored to the areas that were restricted last night, however, it can take a number of hours for all areas to get water back after an outage.
South Dublin County Council
The following areas have been notified as have water disruptions in South Dublin County Council:

Limerick County Council
Limerick County Council has warned of ongoing disruption to water supplies throughout the county.
Following a meeting of the local authority's Crisis Management Team this morning it was decided that due to a reduction in the amount of storage available in reservoirs, regular night-time restrictions in service can be expected until water levels are restored to normal.
In addition, due to breakages in water mains, unannounced disruptions to water supply can also be expected during daytime hours pending the repair of such breakages.
Customers should also be aware that those water users located at the extremity of water mains, or in elevated areas, are most likely to experience interruption to supply.
Property owners are requested to inspect vacant/closed premises and address any leakage issues detected.
Limerick County Council is requesting all water users to continue to conserve water supplies during this recovery period.
Boil water notices continue to apply to the Abbeyfeale, Kilmallock and Newcastle West Water Supply Schemes
Further information is available from www.lcc.ie

Louth County Council

Dunleer - 2 large bursts being attended to, number of houses may be without supply.
Tullyallen - levels are low but rising following repairs and supply should be ok.
Collon - some houses in outlying areas such as Philipstown and Rathesker may be experiencing problems.
Overall message remains the same as yesterday crews continuing to work to restore supplies in areas affected. Again request assistance of public in reporting domestic leaks or frozen stopcocks, checking unoccupied properties and commercial premises and farmers to check agricultural connections. All calls to be made to Emergency Number and will be followed up.
Longford County Council
The water supply for Longford Town and surrounding areas is fed from the Knockahaw Reservoir. Water levels are at a critical level at present. Last night it was necessary to shut off the water supply from 8.00pm until 8.00am this morning.
It is likely that the water supply will have to be turned off later today. While the Council is pumping water into the system as quickly as possible it has not been possible to reach the levels that are necessary in order to supply customers.
Customers who have not had water since before the thaw commenced are still experiencing problems related to frozen pipes. It is thought that the difficulties caused by the freeze will clear over the next two days. While the thaw is ongoing some pipes which are deeper in the ground are still frozen.
Customers who have had a water supply and who find that they no longer have water are being affected by falling pressure which is resulting from leaks and high consumption.
It is likely that water supplies in many areas will have to be restricted over the coming days in order to try to restore water levels.
Further updates will be posted on the Council's website as regularly as possible.
Customers are urged to please make every effort to conserve water today and in the coming days.
The Council regrets any inconvenience that is caused by disruptions to service.

Mayo County Council
Numerous bursts in the water supply networks and leaks in homes and businesses have increased usage to record levels following the recent thaw. This is placing enormous pressure on all of the various water supplies.
Householders have been asked to switch off all dripping taps and to avoid wasting water. The public are also requested to report leaks so that they can be repaired in order to protect supplies. Despite all of these measures problems persist and it has been necessary to apply restrictions in Achill, Bangor, Ballina and Swinford where the situation is very serious.

Meath County Council

General
Supplies are generally being maintained to all major centres but demand is well in excess of normal levels and supply is struggling to meet demand in many areas. A lot of individual problem areas are emerging in particular on higher or outlying parts of schemes (e.g. Navan, Dunshaughlin and Ashbourne). Water tankers are being deployed as necessary.

Navan Town & Area
Supply to Navan Town and area is generally being maintained but with some areas experiencing low pressure. Many outlying areas served by the town supply are currently without water or have severely restricted supply. These include: Dunderry, Boyerstown, Commons Road, Robinstown, Wilkinstown.
Water tankers are in place in Robinstown and Dunderry.

Dunshaughlin Area
Supply is generally being maintained across this area but there are some local problems in Ashbourne, Dunboyne and Dunshaughlin. Supply to Ratoath is being maintained.
In Ashbourne, Race Hill, Rath Lodge and Brindley Park are experiencing water loss and/or severely reduced pressure.
In Dunshaughlin, Maeldun and Ardlea are experiencing water loss and/or severely low pressure. Supply was restored to Dunboyne/Clonee/Kilcloon last night however we are receiving some reports of low pressure and water loss in Dunboyne again this morning and this is being investigated. Kilcloon may still be experiencing water loss and some pressure problems.

Slane / East Meath Area
Supply to most of the coastal area is being maintained.
Problems are being experienced in Stamullen and water is being tankered to the reservoir to try to maintain supply
Slane village - demand from this scheme is very high and while supply to the village is being maintained problems are being experienced in outlying areas. In particular Beauparc will have supply and pressure problems.

Trim Area
Supply is being maintained to Trim Town and immediate areas. Clonard lost supply yesterday (Tuesday) but is now restored.
Problems are anticipated in Longwood as demand is way in excess of normal levels and supply cannot meet demand at present. Supply to Kildalkey village has been maintained up to now other some local problems with frozen services. However due to increased demand on the Athboy supply (see also Kells Area) which supplies Kildalkey, problems with supply to the village are anticipated. There is a continuing problem with supply to Ballivor village and water is being tinkered to the reservoir to help maintain some supply to the area. Supply to Enfield is being maintained but we have reports of some individual local problems.

Kells Area
Supply is being maintained to Kells Town and immediate area.
Athboy supply is under pressure as demand is well in excess of normal. This may have knock on effects in Kildalkey and Rathcairn.
Nobber & Kilmainhamwood - demand is high in these areas but no major problems reported at the moment. The supply to Moynalty is being monitored and some parts of that scheme may be experiencing low pressure.

Westmeath County Council
Athlone Water Supply Eastside
Despite the overnight shut-off of supply, reservoir levels are still critically low. One reason for this is that a large volume of water is being lost due to leaks between the water treatment plant and the Annagh Reservoir. To increase the supply to the reservoir, supply to the following areas will be cut off for the next number of hours today, Wednesday 29th December:
-Mayfield Grove
-McCormack Park

The Batteries Reservoir was opened this morning and emptied within 1 hour. It is currently closed to allow it to refill and will be reopened shortly at approximately 2.00pm when it is hoped water supply will resume.
Supply Shut-off tonight Wednesday 29th December
Due to the recent severe weather conditions and the depletion in treated water levels it is intended to close the outlet from the reservoirs in the Athlone Area tonight in order to conserve water and to allow water storage levels to be replenished in the reservoirs.
This will affect water supply to the all areas supplied by the Athlone Regional Water Supply Scheme & includes Athlone town & environs, Moate, Glasson, Ballykeeran.
Please Report all Leaks
Water consumers need to be aware that even though there is a significant thaw underway, it is taking some time to thaw buried water service pipes into individual properties. As water supplies return to properties, owner should continuously check for leaks within these properties. Westmeath County Council appeals to all persons to reports ALL LEAKS to Westmeath County Council at 044 9332000.
The exception cold weather followed quickly by the thaw over the last 2-3 days has resulted in a very significant increase in the number of leaks (large & small) on both public & private services. For example consumption of water (usage & leaks) has increased in the Mullingar scheme by over 30% in just a week.
In order to restore reservoir levels & to ensure that all parts of the county have a water supply tomorrow, Thursday, the Council will implement a series of planned service shut offs to ALL WATER SUPPLIES throughout Co. Westmeath tonight, Wednesday, & Thuirsday morning.
Water Supply - Mullingar Regional Water Supply Scheme

This will affect water supply to the most areas supplied by the L. Lene Regional Water Supply Scheme & includes Castlepollard, Delvin, Collinstown, Clonmellon.
Water Supply - Generally
As the thaw sets in, water mains may burst following the recent severe weather. The Council is working to deal with these leaks as quickly as possible. It may be necessary for the Council to implement emergency shut offs without warning in order to ensure that reservoir levels are maintained and to facilitate repairs.
As we are experiencing leaks in the water networks, we would seek the co-operation of the public to notify us immediately if they notice such leaks occurring. The Water Services staff are continuing to work to restore full supplies to all consumers and are closely monitoring the networks for leaks in the affected areas.
Please Report all Leaks
Westmeath County Council requests all property owners, especially those properties empty for a few days, to check their water pipes & connections for leaks. Please report any leaks to Westmeath County Council at 044 9332000.

Northern Ireland - Long queues at water tankers

The Department of the Environment has asked property owners to check for water leaks, as supplies are disrupted in many areas across the country.

The water shortage has been caused by pipes bursting during the cold spell and by a surge in demand after the thaw set in.
The Department said all available personnel have been mobilised to detect and repair burst water mains nationwide.
The principal officer in the water services section of the Department, Gerry Galvin, said practically every county was affected, but that supply would improve, albeit slowly, over the coming days.

On RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Mr Galvin appealed to key-holders who had not checked their premises over the holiday period to do so.

Local authorities have been placing tankers in the worst affected areas.
A converted fire engine is being used to refill tanks at hostels, nursing homes and hospitals in Dublin.
Families and businesses have been coping either with no water or with restrictions on supply.
People are being urged to conserve water, as the restrictions and cuts to supply are expected to continue for several days.

Up to 10,000 households are experiencing disruption to their water supply in Cork City and city management say it could take anything from a week to ten days before the network gets back to normal.

Areas being affected by overnight shutdowns include Gurranabraher, Farranree, Ballyvolane, Montenotte, and Lotabeg, along with Blackrock, Friar's Walk and parts of the Boreenamanna Road on the southside.

In Co Cork, some severe problems are still being experienced in areas such as Mallow, Macroom and in townlands east of Bantry, where drinking water is being provided at the local fire station.
In Mallow, efforts to restore the supply received a major setback last night when an ESB transformer blew near the local pumphouse.
The council say there will be cuts in supplies in many areas again tonight as efforts continue to build up water reserves in the resevoirs.
Consumers are again being asked to use water sparingly and property owners and key holders are being told to check for leaks in unoccupied premises and shut off water if necessary.

In Co Kerry, the north of the county is the worst hit. The water supply to Listowel, large parts of Tralee and most of the county's major towns turned off again overnight in a bid to bring levels back up.
Ahead of New Year's Eve, Kerry Co Council say they will be doing their utmost to support the water supply to pubs, restaurants and hotels.

A spokesperson for Kildare County Council has said that any unoccupied premises or properties where a leak has been identified will have their water supplies turned off without notice.

Offaly County Council warned of possible water shut-offs and said it is working to fix a problem with the Tullamore town supply.

A major water burst on a Roscommon water main has also resulted in disruption to supply to some parts of Sligo and water is not expected to be restored until this afternoon.
In Co Clare, water reservoir levels have shown an improvement in some areas.
The county council says the detection and repair of leaks will continue over the coming days. Overnight water shut-offs will continue until further notice.
Limerick County Council said this evening that it will be necessary to shut off water supplies due to repairs on the water supply network.
Westmeath County Council says that reservoir levels remain critically low. On the eastside of the county supply will be cut off to several areas for the next number of hours.
On the westside, the Batteries Reservoir was opened this morning and emptied within an hour, according to the council.

Meath County Council says supplies of water are 'generally being maintained to all major centres but demand continues to well in excess of normal with more than double normal levels in some areas'.

Sligo County Council has warned that restrictions may be required over the coming days to restore reservoir levels. It said tankers and standpipes are being provided in a number of locations.

Water supplies remain at critically low levels for up to 80,000 households throughout Galway city and county.
While leak detection and repair crews try to resolve the problem, a number of households in the city have been without water for ten days.

Kilkenny County Council has said Goresbridge and Inistioge will have no water tonight.

NI water supplies at critical level
Scotland is providing 160,000 litres of water in an attempt to ease Northern Ireland's drinking water crisis.

The Stormont executive accepted the offer of aid by Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond.
The Northern Ireland Executive is to hold an emergency meeting tomorrow to discuss the problems caused by burst pipes and water shortages.
Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness has said he was disappointed by the manner in which Northern Ireland Water responded to the crisis.
Speaking at a press conference in Belfast, Mr McGuinness said he felt let down by the company's handling of the situation.
He said it was unacceptable that some people had been without a water supply for 11 or 12 days.
Director of Engineering at Northern Ireland Water Trevor Haslett said the crisis had been caused by a combination of a rapid thaw of snow and ice, problems with the water supply infrastructure, and low water levels in reservoirs.
Mr Haslett added that an investment of £110m had been made in the water supply infrastructure over the past three years.
He said that some water pipes in the North dated back to the late 19th Century and said that further investment was needed.
Mr Haslett said 200m litres of extra water have been pumped into the system each day over the Christmas period.
He said Northern Ireland Water was expecting the situation to have improved significantly by Friday.

The worst affected areas are in Co Antrim - Belfast, Lisburn, Templepatrick, Crumlin, Newtownabbey and Antrim town.
In Co Armagh, the thaw put such pressure on drains that sewage spilled into houses.

Belfast City Council is distributing drinking water from three leisure centres - Avoniel Leisure Centre (east Belfast), Whiterock Leisure Centre (west Belfast) and Olympia Leisure Centre (south Belfast).
It is limited to 20 litres per household and the council says people must bring their own containers to collect water.
Water is also being made available from a tanker at the Northern Ireland Water depot at Westland House in north Belfast.
Belfast City Council is also opening all of its leisure centres to provide free shower facilities.

New Years Eve Water Restrictions To Be Eased

The Department of the Environment has said that restrictions on water supplies will be eased in most areas tomorrow night to facilitate New Year's Eve celebrations.

County/city council information
http://www.rte.ie/news/2010/1230/watercountybreakdown.html
Most local authorities expect that it will be next week before water supplies return to normal.

Dublin City Council said its very restrictive regime would have to continue, but confirmed it would minimise restrictions tomorrow night. Restrictions will however be in place from 6pm this evening until 2pm tomorrow afternoon.

Hotels, pubs and restaurants had said they were not sure how they would cope if they had to deal with water shortages during an expected surge in business tomorrow night.

Meanwhile, Environment Minister John Gormley has said that significant progress was being made across the country to deal with water leaks and stoppages, but added it would take time for services to return to normal.

Mr Gormley was speaking following a meeting of the water sub-committee of the National Severe Weather Co-ordination Committee in the Custom House.

The minister said he appreciated that many people were affected, but said that significant leaks in the water system were unavoidable because of the recent severe weather.

Householders and businesses throughout the country have been coping with water shortages since the thaw set in on St Stephen's Day following the severe freezing weather.

Restrictions are currently in force in every county with local authorities struggling to deal with demand for water outweighing supply.

Repair crews have been deployed all this week to fix leaks; mobile water supplies are being delivered to the worst hit areas by council workers.

Meanwhile, warnings have been issued to householders that bogus callers may use the crisis as an excuse to get into people's homes.

People have been reminded that local authority workers always carry identification and that people in any doubt should not allow callers into their homes.

Northern Ireland

The authorities in Northern Ireland have conceded that it could be into next week before all householders have their water supplies restored.
Northern Ireland Water, which has been criticised for its inaction and ineptitude in dealing with the crisis, reported a slightly improved situation today.

It has increased the supply of water by 40%, with an extra 250m litres a day going into the system.
However, much of this additional capacity is being lost from leakages and burst pipes.

At least 32,000 householders and businesses are still without water, and it will be into next week before everyone is re-connected.

The Scottish government has sent assistance in the form of almost 200,000 litres of bottles water. This is now being distributed across the 26 local council areas in Northern Ireland.

The Stormont Executive is to hold an emergency meeting today to discuss the crisis.

Secretary of State Owen Paterson was to have talks with the first and deputy first ministers in advance of the meeting.
Mr Paterson was expected to discuss ways in which the British government might assist authorities in dealing with the crisis.

Belfast Lord Mayor Pat Convery has also convened a meeting of the agencies involved in the water crisis, which is to be held at Belfast City Hall tomorrow.

Thanks for updates Noely.Water went off last night, back on today at 2-30.Got a bit worried about tank in attic.Pressure was very low,so it took a while for tank to fill back up.Everything seems ok for leaks.A poor lady across from me had problems with her electricity, some sockets went down on her.
Could not find problem, than she called me back over to her house. She said a noise was coming from her shed out the back, went to have a look, she has washing machine-dryer freezer and so on there.
God help her she had water pumping out from leaks.Turned of water and she got sorted out.We have to look out for elderly people, especially the elderly living alone. Thanks again Noely for updades(y)

Many Areas To Have Water Restored In The Next Few Days

Most parts of the country will see a resumption of normal water supply within the next two days, but Dublin restrictions are expected to remain in place until 10 January.
Minister for the Environment John Gormley made the announcement following a meeting of the water sub-committee of the National Severe Weather Co-ordination Committee at the Custom House.

The minister said that significant progress was being made across the country to deal with water leaks and stoppages, but added it would take time for services to return to normal.

Restrictions on water supplies will be eased in most areas tomorrow night to facilitate New Year's Eve celebrations.

Dublin City Council said its very restrictive regime would have to continue, but confirmed it would also minimise restrictions tomorrow night. Restrictions will however be in place from 6pm this evening until 2pm tomorrow afternoon.

The Dublin water supply will then continue until 1am Saturday morning, when pressure will be reduced until 4pm in the afternoon.
Hotels, pubs and restaurants had said they were not sure how they would cope if they had to deal with water shortages during an expected surge in business tomorrow night.

Northern Ireland's First and Deputy First Ministers have strongly condemned the way in which Northern Ireland Water has handled the current water crisis.
Peter Robinson said the water authority had been shambolic and ineffective during the crisis and said it was 'not fit for purpose'.
6,000 homes are still without supply and 60,000 other householders and businesses also face having their water supply curtailed on a rotation basis.
The company says it could be into next week before the normal water service is fully restored.
The members of the Stormont Executive were called back early from their Christmas break to decide how the chaotic situation could be resolved.
Martin McGuinness said people needed to be held accountable and said he was not going to make excuses for a body that had 'so miserably failed our citizens'.

The Scottish government has sent assistance in the form of almost 200,000 litres of bottles water. This is now being distributed across the 26 local council areas in Northern Ireland.

Efforts continue to restore normal water supply

Updated: Friday, 31 December 2010

Water restrictions are being lifted for the New Year's festivities tonight by local authorities around the country.

00041208-314.jpg

However, supply is still being curtailed by many local authorities.

Efforts are continuing today to restore water to households and businesses around the country.

Shortages in parts of Mayo are described as critical, while up to 1,000 homes in Galway city still have no water supply.

In many parts of the east and midlands, people have to collect water from tankers.

Minister for the Environment John Gormley says most counties will see a resumption of normal water supplies services by the New Year.

In Dublin, water restrictions are expected to continue for another ten days.

Northern Ireland

Meanwhile, the Board of Northern Ireland Water is meeting in Belfast to review how it handled the crisis in supply in recent days.
After the meeting the chairman of Northern Ireland Water, Padraic White, a former chairman of the Industrial development Authority in the Republic, will report back to the Stormont Minister Conor Murphy.

Senior ministers last night described the company's response as shambolic, ineffective and not fit for purpose.
Over 6,000 homes in Northern Ireland are still without running water.

It is expected to be next week before all properties, especially those in rural areas, are reconnected.
Northern Ireland Water says that almost 25,000 other properties in the east of Northern Ireland will have an on/off supply.

Updated 19:47

The Chairman of Northern Ireland Water Pauric White has said that 4,400 homes in Northern Ireland are still without running water. He was speaking following a meeting of the board of Northern Ireland Water in Belfast, a day after Stormont ministers described the company's handling of the water crisis as a shambles.

Mr White said the response of the company was unacceptable and that the emergency plan in place for years was seriously inadequate and not capable of dealing with the severe weather crisis.

He said a full review would be put in place but no senior management had offered their resignation and no one has been sacked.
He said the immediate priority was to restore water to those without supplies.

Northern Ireland - Major Disruption to water services

Following an easing of restrictions to facilitate New Year's Eve festivities last night, it is expected that most areas of the country will have normal water supplies restored before Monday.

However, in Dublin the restrictions could continue for another ten days.

Meanwhile, an independent inquiry is to be carried out into the water supply crisis in Northern Ireland.
Thousands of households in the North are still without a mains water supply this evening, as the authorities continue to battle to re-connect customers and repair leaks.

The Northern Ireland Water company has warned consumers that supplies may be further curtailed this evening and overnight.

The number of homes across the North without water has fallen to 2,600.

The worst affected areas are Cookstown in Co Tyrone, Hannahstown in Belfast, and Burren and Warrenpoint in Co Down.

Earlier NI Water had announced that thousands of households which had been getting an intermittent water supply would have their full normal service returned.

However, the company now says that supplies will again be curtailed for a limited period between 8pm and 10pm tonight, and 7am and 8am in the morning.

The company has also condemned an incident in Coalisland, Co Tyrone overnight, when vandals released thousands of gallons of water from containers.

NI Water say it has 500 staff on the ground dealing with supply issues and checking for leakage in private and commercial premises.

It is likely to be late next week before supply is back to normal.

The board of directors of Northern Ireland Water is to meet on Tuesday to consider how its response to a similar crisis in the future might be improved.

Stormont Minister Conor Murphy has announced that an independent inquiry into the water chaos is to be held.

The members of the inquiry team and its terms of reference will be revealed next week.

Dublin faces further water restrictions

Water - Damaged pipes contribute to shortage

Local Authorities have called on people to check office blocks and schools for pipe breakages and leaks before they reopen on Tuesday.

While there has been a general improvement in water supply around the country, there are still areas affected by restrictions.

Water restrictions in Dublin will begin at 6pm tomorrow and will continue until 7am on Tuesday morning.

On Tuesday evening restrictions in Dublin will begin at 7pm until 7am Wednesday morning.

A spokesperson for Dublin City Council said that he expects restrictions of some form to remain in place for the next 10-12 days.

In Galway, water is returning to most areas however the east of the county is still experiencing restrictions.

Around 100 houses in Galway City have no supply.

In Cork, repair crews will be working in the Mallow area over the coming week which may lead to short term disruptions to supplies while water supply to south Cork has been restored to all areas.

In Co Clare houses along the coast are still affected by disruptions, and around 100 houses in Ennis are without water.

In Athlone in Co Westmeath, council crews are working to repair four major bursts, and the situation is expected to improve once these are fixed.

Water has returned to most households in Laois. There are some individual houses that are affected but the majority of bursts have been detected, despite pressure problems.

The situation in Leitrim and Mayo has greatly improved.

The number of properties without water across Northern Ireland has dropped to 799, the lowest figure since the crisis began a week ago.

Most local authorities are calling for those who are still experiencing water problems to be patient.

Those who have water are being asked to continue to conserve it in order to help ensure a continuation of the supply.

Water supplies - General improvement

Local Authorities are again calling on people to check office blocks and schools for pipe breakages and leaks before they re-open following the Christmas and New Year holidays.

A spokesman for the Department of the Environment has said the water supply situation has stabilised across most of the country and has improved in Dublin.

Principal Engineering adviser to the Department of the Environment Gerry Galvin has said that Dublin had had a very good water supply for the past 24 hours.

Supply has exceeded demand for the past three days mainly due to the restrictions that have been in place.

Mr Galvin said that there were still problems in some areas caused by burst pipes rather than a lack of supply and he said that there were two critical periods ahead now: tomorrow when most businesses and industry return to to normal and next week when the schools are back.

In Dublin, restrictions are expected to continue for at least another 12 days.

Dublin City Council has said that water in many areas will be shut off from 6pm tonight until 7am tomorrow morning.

A spokesperson for Dublin City Council has said that he expects restrictions of some form to remain in place until the middle of this month.

Households and businesses nationwide are still subject to restrictions.

Consumers who have water are being asked to make every effort to conserve supplies.

Work to repair burst pipes is continuing with night-time restrictions still in operation in many counties.

Due to the progress that has been made, night time restrictions will be lifted this evening in the following areas of Cork city: Harbour View Road, Cathedral Road, Churchfield Avenue, Rathmore Park, Audley Place, Old blackrock Road, Rockboro Avenue.

Night time restrictions will however continue to apply for the time being in other affected areas.

Due to the improvement in supply the use of standpipes will be discontinued from today.

In Co Cork, repair crews will be working in the Mallow area over the coming week which may lead to short term disruptions to supplies.

Repair work is being carried out in other areas around the country including Athlone in Co Westmeath.

Improvements in supply have also been reported in Laois and Mayo.

In Leitrim, water levels in reservoirs continue to improve. But it remains necessary to turn off water supplies at night-time in all areas with the exception of the main towns and villages.

A water tanker continues to be available to supply water from 11am to 2pm each day in Ballinaglera at Rynn's Pub.

However, parts of Galway and Clare are still experiencing significant disruption to water supplies.

In Sligo, night time restrictions will apply in the following areas: Ballymote, Coolaney, Ballinacarrow, Monasteraden, Gurteeen and Ballintogher.

The emergency water tanks and stand-pipes are currently being removed, but this facility will be kept under review over the coming days.

Meanwhile, Chief Executive of the Restaurants Association of Ireland Adrian Cummins is calling for a reduction in rates for its members.

Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Mr Cummins said the water restrictions have meant that businesses that had already seen a cut in diners during the cold snap struggled to stay open due to the water restrictions.

The organisation is now seeking to hold an emergency meeting with Minister for Tourism Mary Hanafin.

In Northern Ireland, fewer than 500 properties are still without mains water supply, about half the number reported yesterday, and a huge reduction on the tens of thousands affected at the height of the crisis there.
Up to 40,000 customers will have their supplies cut off again for a time this evening, and overnight, as the low levels of water in some reservoirs remained a concern.

Water - Businesses opening after holidays to test water supply

The Department of the Environment says today marks a critical point for water supplies as companies resume normal business hours.

Some businesses reopening after the Christmas and New Year holidays will be faced with no water or restrictions on their supply.

The department said that water supply has stabilised across most of the country and had improved in Dublin.

Dublin City Council is now staggering restrictions, so that areas most affected will be cut off only every second night.

Restrictions are still in place in a number of other areas, including in counties Cork, Clare and Sligo.

The next big test for supply will be next Monday, when schools around the country reopen.

The number of households in Northern Ireland without a mains water supply has fallen to just under 300.

Dublin water cuts to last another three nights

Dublin City Council has said that water restrictions will remain in place for the next three nights because the recovery of water levels at its reservoirs was less than expected last night.

Water - Businesses reopening after holidays have tested supply

Dublin City Council has said that water restrictions will remain in place for the next three nights because the recovery of water levels at its reservoirs was less than expected last night.

City Engineer Michael Phillips said that 20m litres of water had been saved last night, which was half the amount the council had hoped for.

The council wanted to stagger the restrictions so that affected areas would only be without water on alternate nights.

Mr Phillips also said that so far no major incidents had been reported as industry and businesses got back to normal today after the Christmas and New Year break.

He said the council would have a good idea by midday tomorrow of how the city's system was coping with the increase in demand for water caused by the return of businesses.

The Department of the Environment has said that water supply has stabilised across most of the country.

However, restrictions are still in place in a number of areas, including in counties Cork, Laois and Sligo.

Limerick County Council has announced it is to shut off water supplies in parts of the county overnight, and Leitrim County Council said it still had supply problems.

Up to 1,000 households and farms in southeast Co Galway are without water since St Stephen's Day.

The rural areas are served by the Ballinasloe Regional Water Supply Scheme.

Galway County Council says it is making every effort to return the water supply in a phased basis over the next day or two.

In the midwest, water supplies are continuing to improve but problems remain in particular areas.

Clare County Council says it estimates that around 200 households in the county are still without water.

Problem areas include the outskirts of Ennis, Shannon, Cratloe and Crusheen. The council believes it will be another two days before supply returns to normal.

The next big test for supply will be next Monday, when schools around the country reopen.

Minister for the Environment John Gormley said efforts were being made to replace old pipes, but it would take at least ten years to upgrade the current system.

Severe weather to return
There are renewed warnings of icy weather returning this week.

Met Éireann is forecasting falls of snow and sleet over much of the country on Thursday night and Friday morning with up to 10cm of snow in many areas.

The December cold snap and subsequent thaw caused widespread disruption to water supplies, the effects of which are still being felt.

Met Éireann says the snow is likely to cause disruption, but is not likely to be as severe as the last freezing period.

Elsewhere, the number of households in Northern Ireland without a mains water supply has fallen to around 150.

Reservoirs are also filling up again, but it will be later today before it is clear if the temporary curtailment of supplies will have to be imposed again this evening.
