High Court: Hotel admitted liability

The High Court was told that Joanne Noone's wedding day will be forever clouded by the memory of the accident at the Setanta House Hotel at Clane Road, Celbridge in September 2003.

33-year-old Ms Noone, from Maynooth in Co Kildare, suffered from post traumatic stress following the incident during which she was trapped underneath rubble and had to be freed by her husband.

She also had to cancel her honeymoon.

Her husband Michael and five other guests are also suing the hotel.

Liability has been admitted and the case was before the High Court for assessment of damages.

Damages in the other cases have yet to be awarded.

Earlier she and her husband broke down in tears as a video of the aftermath of the accident was shown to the court.

Awarding damages of €42,000, Mr Justice Iarfhlaith O Neill said it was clearly a pretty catastrophic and most unusual event, but fortunately nobody had suffered serious injury.

He said it was clear the upset and shock suffered by Ms Noone continued for some days after the event.

The court heard that many of the 129 guests had to be taken to hospital after the entire ceiling collapsed on them as the wedding party prepared for the first dance.

The High court was shown video footage of the aftermath of the accident which showed guests injured and upset.

Senior Counsel for Ms Noone Brendan Watchorn told the court the incident left a dent in their marriage and as a result Ms Noone felt it got off to a bad start.
