More than 85% of households have not paid the Household Charge ahead of the 31 March deadline.

Those opposed to the charge say it shows that householders are not prepared to pay it

More than 85% of households have not paid the household charge with just over two and a half weeks to go before the deadline.

The body responsible for collecting the payments says its confident more people will pay closer to the deadline.

However, those opposed to the charge say it shows that householders are not prepared to pay it.

So far just over 224,000 households have paid the charge - just 14% of the 1.6m households thought to be liable.

The Local Government Management Association is responsible for collecting payments.

Today it met with the ESB electricity network to discuss how they can share information in order to track down those who do not pay.

The Data Protection Commissioner says its awaiting a response from the parties as to how they will do this within their code of practise.

Householders have until the 31 March to pay the charge and the body responsible for collecting it says it will be able to cope with a last minute surge in payments.

However, it says it will make no exceptions if people fail to pay on time and that anyone who misses the deadline will be subject to a fine.

Dont pay the household charge :no no:

First you would have to be living in Ireland, then a house owner Javed:dunno: I bet your parents pay their household charges (Poll tax, or whatever it is called now(Rates???))

Back to this charge, I suggest we just send the government our bank cards and ask them to give us an allowance every month, it would be easier than them trying to include more and more stealth taxes on the ordinary working man and woman.
As for me Fork the government, I aint paying.

I hope this video works :)

Brilliant Video, this is the kind of thing that people all over the world need to start doing and let the government know that we are not going to take anymore, enough is enough, most middle class people just have nothing more left to give, the government made this bloody mess by pissing away our money and the saddest part is they don't fear us anymore, it's about bloody time we stand up and make them scared of us.

I know this part didn't happen in Ireland, but I'm sure you all heard about the American government bailing out the banks in 2008 to the tune of 700 billion dollars after the credit crunch, well that was a lie, it was more like 7.7 trillion dollars, there are even stories stating that the bailout is even as high as 26 trillion dollars, can anyone not be just about driven mad by that?

The first step is to NOT register. Why should the people self register and to the work that many civil servants could be employed to do?

How are they going to have the resources to identify, follow & locate those who refuse to pay?

What means are they going to use to identify those who don't register as being the official owner of a residential premises? Are they going to use the mortgage providers, the electoral register or what?

What would happen if one were to go and change their address on the electoral register to a fictitious one?

What if a home owner has their mortgage paid in full and is no longer tied to a financial institution with regard to their doweling?

What constitutes a contract? Is any agreement that is put on paper and signed by the individuals involved plus a third party witness not a contract? I know a will can be made without the need to engage the legal profession.

Here's a scenario,

You are the owner of your home and no longer have a mortgage. You draw up a contract with your daughter, son, mother, father, or whoever you decide to do it with, at the same time each contract is done twice, once to transfer the ownership of the property from you & simultaneously another done to transfer the property back to you, date none of them but make sure you hold all of them. Now, the day eventually comes when you are served with a court action summons on behalf of the government for non payment of the household charge, You produce one of the contracts to prove that you are no longer the owner ;) They then have to start legal proceeding against the new owner (however long that would take) When they eventually get to serve that new owner, you simply get them to produce the second contract whereby they transferred the property to someone else, do you see where this is going? lol

Love it Gman, but in answer to the first question, they are going to use the utility company's records - Gas/Electric, and they have been told this is okay as they have already passed the bill into law ------> CANT'S, or something that sounds somewhat similar.:willy nilly:

Update :

Joe Higgins queries Household Charge figures

Updated: Wednesday, 14 March 2012

Many of those who have registered for the Household Charge to date have an exemption from the payment, according to Socialist Party leader Joe Higgins.

Joe Higgins said that the ordinary people have spoken against the Household Charge

Socialist Party leader Joe Higgins has claimed that many of those who have registered for the Household Charge to date will not have to pay it as they have an exemption from the payment.

Figures revealed yesterday that 85% of households have not registered or paid the charge, which is due before 31 March.

Speaking on Adhmhaidin on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta, Deputy Higgins said that the figures were actually worse than the Government had indicated, as many of the 230,000 that had registered by yesterday afternoon were exempt from the payment.

He said that the low level of compliance illustrated the strength of the national campaign that is under way, that the ordinary people have spoken and that the Government will have no choice but to listen to the people.

He said that the figure of non-payment could be in the region of 750,000 and could even be one million.

thaanks for that wheelo as i had no idea it was in Ireland only, but i'd never heard of it. I remember a similar case here a few yrs ago with council tax as we call it ( or poll tax as it was called) they jailed pensioners in their 70's/80's for not paying it. SCUM is all the government is!! how the hell can you jail an oap if they cant afford to pay their taxes!!
dont want to get into a debate here but IF they stopped giving freebies out to those that really dont need it ( or should i say fraudsters) then they would have money to cover the cost!!

Not to pi$$ on your parade Linny, there are a very specific set of circumstances at play here, where our government agreed to bail out all the banks and forgive their reckless lending, instead of letting them go to the wall(like the northern rock fiasco over your way).
the reason for this is , whether they admit it or not, is that the people who lent to our banks to lend recklessly to developers, etc., were the big European banks, and the European powers that be do not want their banks to pay for their reckless lending to our recklessly lending banks, clear???? clear as mud to most of us here too linny, any room for a lodger or two??lol

[h=1]Sinn Féin TD admonished over Household Charge stance[/h] Updated: Thursday, 15 March 2012

Education Minister Ruairi Quinn has told a Sinn Féin TD to reconsider his position on the Household Charge.

Jonathan O'Brien said the Household Charge was neither just nor fair

The Minister for Education has told a Sinn Féin TD to reconsider his position on the Household Charge.

Ruairi Quinn told Jonathan O'Brien that he was inciting people not to pay the charge and therefore to break the law.

The minister said it was not constructive for any member of the Dáil to encourage people not to pay the charge. He added that deputies had a duty to uphold the law.

Deputy O'Brien said a large section of the population, including himself, had decided not to register to pay the charge, and asked the minister if it was now time to scrap the tax.

The Sinn Féin TD for Cork North Central said he had been elected to implement just and fair laws, but the household tax was neither.

Legislation to be available in Irish and English
Irish and English versions of the legislation governing the new household charge are currently with the printers and should be available next week, according to information provided to the Office of the Irish Language Commissioner.

An Coimisinéir Teanga, Seán Ó Cuirreáin, has told Nuacht that while the English version is already available in electronic format on the internet, printed versions are not available yet in either language.

Acts of the Oireachtas must by law be printed and published simultaneously in both official languages as soon as possible after their enactment.

However, the law does allow for initial publication in one language in electronic format, according to the commissioner.

[h=1]Household charge data handling to be finalised[/h] Updated: Monday, 19 March 2012

The Data Protection Commissioner Billy Hawkes has said his office hopes to finalise protocols with the Department of the Environment, this week, for handling and safeguarding data that is handed over in relation to the household charge.

There have been many protests against the charge

With 12 days to go before the registration deadline, its estimated that only one sixth of those liable have already done so.

Yesterday the Commissioner said that no changes to legislation are necessary to allow for data collection from government bodies and utility suppliers to assist in collecting the charge.

On Morning Ireland, Mr Hawkes said he has outlined his concerns in negotiations with the Department.

Independent TD Mick Wallace, who opposes the introduction of the charge told Morning Ireland he believed the government was underestimating the public anger on the issue.
