A shot from above of an eagle soaring over a national park in Indonesia has won a new drone photography competition.

Light, small high-quality cameras mean that stunning aerial photography and film-making is easier than ever.

A new National Geographic competition has highlighted some of the best examples of drone photography submitted to website Dronestagram.

A message on the site said: "Picking winners was a very difficult task especially because of the great quality of the photos that have been submitted.

"We tried to reward the photos that show the fantastic potential offered by drones in terms of image. It’s been an amazing first edition with many photos entered from everywhere in the world."

The winning photograph was taken by Dendi Pratam from Yogyakarta, Indonesia, who said the bird appeared to try to play with the drone.

Second place went to Jericho Saniel Lunario, from the Philippines, who captured aerial shots of park visitors in Manila smiling at his drone.

Third place went to Dominique Reginensi Reignier-Esery from Haute-Savoie's shot of the sunset over Annecy in France.
