Former Sheffield Wednesday boss Brian Laws has been appointed as Burnley's new manager to replace Owen Coyle.

A press conference has been called for 15.30GMT to formally present the new boss at Turf Moor as Laws, who managed Grimsby, Scunthorpe and the Owls and also represented Burnley as a player, returns to the club.

Laws is a surprise appointment after being sacked by Championship strugglers Wednesday last month, but he has signed a two-and-a-half year deal with the Clarets and will be joined by his former assistant, Russ Wilcox. Burnley captain Graham Alexander has also taken on a new role as player-coach.

A club statement read: "We believe Brian will deliver a continuity of the culture to which Burnley fans and staff have become accustomed. As a former Burnley defender, he is especially familiar with the club, the traditions we have and the passion we all share.

''The Burnley board have been particularly impressed by the way Brian consistently achieved relative success in his former post at Sheffield Wednesday, while operating with one of the lowest wage and transfer budgets in the Championship.
