Minimum Apple TV version?

Is there a minimum Apple TV version that’s usable?

I was looking at the 1st gen 4k (A1842) but as I don’t have a 4k tv was just wondering if I can get away with something older/cheaper, would the 3rd or 4th gen ones (A1625/A1427) still be good enough?

I don't have an older model to validate this, but it does seem the older models are receiving updates and as long as you aren't trying to play 4K content, it should be fine IMO. Here's a reddit thread that I found. Apple usually put decent hardware in their products that will last a while

Seen 3rd Gen used selling for £20-30
If you want to future-proof, used 64GB 4K Apple TV = £100

Prob doesnt answer your question but below Apple page gives an overview of each model:

Identify your Apple TV model – Apple Support (UK)

Although you don't have a 4K TV at the moment, I would futureproof myself and get a 4k one(?). I would also keep an eye out on eBay item number 115447216938. They regularly have 20% off codes so it might be worth snapping one up when it goes on offer.

I actually managed to pick up an ATV 4K (1st gen with the black remote) from one of those second hand electronics shops yesterday so hopeully that'll work well for me.
