Students at a US primary school have been evacuated as police responded to reports of a shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

Schools across the district are on lock-down as a preventive measure, the school superintendent's office said.

Police arrived at the school soon after 09:40 local time (14:40 GMT) and a spokesman described the situation as an active scene.

It is not clear how many people may have been injured.

A local NBC news channel said that a hospital in nearby Danbury had reported receiving three injured patients.

There are unconfirmed reports of two shooters, according to a report in the local Hartford Courant newspaper.

Police received a call reporting that a gunman was in the school's main office. One person there had "numerous gunshot wounds", the newspaper added.

Local media report that at least one gunman may have been killed.

Sandy Hook School - described by correspondents as a highly rated school - has cancelled its kindergarten class on Friday and will not operate midday bus runs, the school's website says.

The public school has more than 600 students in classes from Kindergarten to 4th Grade - including students aged from five to 10.

On its website, Danbury Hospital said it was aware of a "situation" at the school.

"Please know we're collecting facts now and will be back to you as soon as possible with the most accurate information," the hospital said in a statement.

A shooting at a US elementary school has killed "multiple" victims including children, according to a local newspaper.

The development was reported by the Hartford Courant, which also said children at the scene of the attack at Sandy Hook Elementary School, in Newtown, Connecticut were among the dead.

The gunman involved in the shooting has also reportedly been killed.

Local media reported there were two shooters, while police reportedly said a gunman was in the main office of the school and that a person in one room had "numerous gunshot wounds".

A dispatcher at the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps said a teacher was shot in the foot and taken to Danbury Hospital.

But State Police are reportedly saying that the school is no longer an "active shooting scene".

Crying pupils were seen being escorted from the school, which has children aged between five and 10 years old.

NEWTOWN, Conn. — At least 27 people were killed, including an unconfirmed number of children, in a shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., on Friday, according to reports from Reuters and The Associated Press. If confirmed, it would be one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history. It comes after a series of shooting rampages in the United States this year that have killed multiple victims.

An entire classroom of students remains unaccounted for, according to a report by The Hartford Courant.

The suspected shooter, the father of a student there, was also killed, CBS News reported. The principal and school psychologist were among the dead, CNN said.

An official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is still under way told the Associated Press the gunman apparently had two guns. The school district remains on lockdown as police investigate the shootings. There are unconfirmed reports of two shooters, according to a local newspaper.

Seems to be always the same
This will be some lunatic
How can these lunatics
Be allowed to get any type of gun
It is crazy to me

The problem is that most of them acquire the guns illegally. While that is not always the case, especially here where it says one of the shooters may have been a father and it stands to reason that he may have gotten them legitimately, the majority of the time the firearms are either stolen or purchased in an illegal manner.

Edit: Updated at 1:30 p.m. ET: Twenty-six people, including 18 children, were killed when a gunman opened fire in a Connecticut elementary school Friday morning, a law enforcement official said. The gunman, who is dead, was a 20-year-old from Connecticut, an official said. He was wearing all black and was carrying two 9mm handguns. Another person was being held by police and questioned, an official said.

So............the handguns were gotten illegally more than likely. ATF prohibits sales of handguns to those under the age of 21.

Ryan Lanza Identified By Police As Gunman In Deadly Connecticut Elementary School

The suspect in one of the the deadliest school shootings in history has been identified as Ryan Lanza, CNN said Friday.

The site said police identified Lanza, 24, as a suspect in the killing of 27 people -- 8 adults and 18 children -- at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

A neighbor of Ryan Lanza's parents in Sandy Hook told The Huffington Post that police are at Lanza's parents house.

Police said shooter was killed during the rampage and several others were injured. The identities of the shooting victims has not yet been released.

The gunman was wearing dark clothing, a mask, a bulletproof vest, and was carrying four guns. A cause and manner of death is pending, police said.

Police continue to investigate if there was a second shooter involved.

Unconfirmed reports say that principal Dawn Hochsprung and a school psychologist were killed, according to a parent who claimed to witness part of the attack, CNN reported.

The masked gunman entered the school administration office around 9:40 a.m., about 30 minutes after the school day began. The first 911 call was received by police one minute later.

Investigators said the gunman fired his weapon at least 100 times.

Students inside the building were escorted out in a single-file line. There are about 626 students enrolled in kindergarten through fourth grade classes at Sandy Hook Elementary, with another 46 faculty members, Newtown Patch reported.

Authorities have not commented on whether the deadly encounter was captured on video surveillance.

Friday's shooting comes just two days after a gunman in Oregon shot and killed two people at a crowded Oregon mall. The suspect in that case was identified as 22-year-old Jacob Tyler Roberts. Police say Roberts’ took his own life inside a mall store. Authorities in that case are still piecing together a possible motive.

Sandy Hook Elementary School is closed Friday while police continue to investigate the shooting.

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) — A man opened fire inside the Connecticut elementary school where his mother worked Friday, killing 26 people, including 18 children, and forcing students to cower in classrooms and then flee with the help of teachers and police.
The death toll — 26 victims plus the gunman — was given to The Associated Press by an official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was still under way.
The shooting appeared to be the nation's second-deadliest school shooting, exceeded only by the Virginia Tech massacre in 2007, which left 32 people and the gunman dead.
Parents flooded to Sandy Hook Elementary School, about 60 miles northeast of New York City, looking for their children in the wake of the shooting. Students were told to close their eyes by police as they were led from the building.
A photo taken by The Newtown Bee newspaper showed a group of young students — some crying, others looking visibly frightened — being escorted by adults through a parking lot in a line, hands on each other's shoulders.
Students and staff were among the victims, state police Lt. Paul Vance said a brief news conference. He also said the gunman was dead inside the school, but he refused to say how many people were killed.
A law enforcement official briefed on the shooting said the gunman died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and that one of the victims was the man's mother, a teacher. The official wasn't authorized to speak about the investigation.
A law enforcement official in Washington said the attacker was a 20-year-old man armed with a .223-caliber rifle. The official also said that police were searching a location in New Jersey in connection with the shootings. That official spoke on the condition of anonymity because the source was not authorized to speak on the record about the developing criminal investigation.
Robert Licata said his 6-year-old son was in class when the gunman burst in and shot the teacher.
"That's when my son grabbed a bunch of his friends and ran out the door," he said. "He was very brave. He waited for his friends."
He said the shooter didn't say a word.
Stephen Delgiadice said his 8-year-old daughter heard two big bangs and teachers told her to get in a corner. His daughter was fine.
"It's alarming, especially in Newtown, Connecticut, which we always thought was the safest place in America," he said.
Danbury Hospital was the only hospital to take in victims from the shootings, admitting three patients. Doctors said at a news conference they cleared four trauma rooms to treat shooting victims.
Mergim Bajraliu, 17, heard the gunshots echo from his home and raced to check on his 9-year-old sister at the school. He said his sister, who was fine, heard a scream come over the intercom at one point. He said teachers were shaking and crying as they came out of the building.
"Everyone was just traumatized," he said.
Richard Wilford's 7-year-old son, Richie, is in the second grade at the school. His son told him that he heard a noise that "sounded like what he described as cans falling."
The boy told him a teacher went out to check on the noise, came back in, locked the door and had the kids huddle up in the corner until police arrived.
"There's no words," Wilford said. "It's sheer terror, a sense of imminent danger, to get to your child and be there to protect him."
Melissa Makris, 43, said her 10-year-old son, Philip, was in the school gym.
"He said he heard a lot of loud noises and then screaming. Then the gym teachers immediately gathered the children in a corner and kept them safe in a corner," Makris said.
The fourth-grader told his mother that the students stayed huddled until police came in the gym. He also told her that he saw what looked like a body under a blanket as he fled the school.
"He said the policeman came in and helped them get out of the building and told them to run," Makris said. "And they ran to the firehouse."
The White House said Barack Obama was notified of the shooting and his spokesman Jay Carney said the president had "enormous sympathy for families that are affected."

It's a terrible terrible shame,so many little lives lost to some fruitcake with a gun.It looks like he started by killing his Father, his brother and then headed to kill his mother...Theres some very evil sick people on this planet

God look after the innocents little souls.

WASHINGTON (AP) —
A law enforcement official says the suspect in the Connecticut school shootings is 24-year-old Ryan Lanza and that his younger brother is being held for questioning as a possible second shooter. The law enforcement official says the boys' mother, Nancy Lanza, works at the school as a teacher.
The official also said Ryan Lanza's girlfriend and another friend are missing in New Jersey.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the official said the suspect is dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because the source was not authorized to speak on the record about the developing criminal investigation.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A tearful President Barack Obama says the country's leaders must "take meaningful action" regardless of politics in response to the mass shooting at a Connecticut elementary school.
The president teared up, at times using an index finger to wipe at the corner of his eyes, as he addressed the nation from the White House. He also paused repeatedly as he struggled to keep his composure while speaking of the children — ages 5 to 10 — who had died and the life milestones they now would miss.
He said, quote, "Our hearts are broken."
Shortly before speaking, Obama ordered that U.S. flags be flown at half-staff on public grounds through Tuesday...........

Absolutely heartbreaking and tragic, 20 little children who will never grow up and live their lives, this is evil beyond words.
I was just watching the news and there was a parent on the news report who has a daughter and son who attend the school, he said his daughter asked him "when will it happen again?" That says it all. :(

The suspect in one of the the deadliest school shootings in history has been identified as Ryan Lanza, CNN said Friday.

Initial reports named the above person to have been the shooter, however this has now been reassessed and police now say that the shooter was actually 20 year old Adam Lanza Ryan Lanzas younger brother.

He is reported to have shot his mother at her home and then used her car to drive to the school to carry out the massacre.
