Toshiba Equium L20 197 wont boot

I have had avg prof for yrs! and now doing yet another maleware scan and it seems to be finding all sorts again via MSE and avg but finding nothing in the maleware. so once ive cleaned again i can come back and look at your post

This thing is doing me in lol! Thanks Sinno

Right all clean again! going to close pc down and restart and jsut to make sure re run scans.

so if i take ownership via my pc does that mean i will have to do it again when i put it on another laptop like his notebook. Or will it work on any machine once i have admin/ownership. Plus once files are accessable does that mean they can be treated as normal and moved copied to any computer or storage device.
His note book is windows 7 so i could bring it here and just copy files via homegroup.

One all this is sorted that old laptop where the hard drive belongs he is going to offer to sell it to the shop and put the money towards an external hard drive. As screen has lots of lines down it he doesnt seem to think we could repair the screen, so might as well "dump it" as he put it!

I would take ownership and then copy all files to his netbook, then format that drive with easus and entirely up to you if you want to reinstall windows xp on it for him in his damaged laptop to sell to the shop,i did replace a screen on a laptop for my missus a while ago and it was fairly easy to do,i searched for the screen on amazon, for about €80 she was happy

have taken ownership and now i can access his files - at last!!! most files have a padlock showing on them. Any reason?

I can access those files but if they are padlocked with they work on another computerNC padlock 2.jpgNC padlock.jpg

You can remove the lock overlay in this case by resetting the permissions to be inherited, and removing all permissions that are not inherited.
Right click the folder, click Properties
Click the Security tab
Click Advanced
Click Change Permissions
Check Both boxes to Include inheritable permissions, and to Replace all child object permissions
Click Apply then click Yes
Wait for the list to refresh
Remove all permissions that say <not inherited>

A post by a person called Simon T on another forum
Sorry i didnt see this till today Linny would have responded sooner
You only need to get his files off it so just look in documents or users and pictures, alot of the other files will be system.A educated guess will often suffice otherwise you will be opening up everything

thanks sinno

Managed to open everything and get permissions so he is now transfering everything onto his notebook.

He had loads of music in his itunes but when we looked in the music files there was nothing there. I dont know much about itunes. but im sure it must transfer from one pc to another if you change pcs. so should his itunes all be on the hard drive so that he can transfer/move it to his notebook

To copy all the items in your iTunes library (including the iTunes Library file that holds all your playlists, playcounts, ratings, and other data) to your external hard drive, follow these steps:

1. Quit iTunes.
2. Locate your external hard drive.

Mac: On the desktop or Finder sidebar.

Windows: In My Computer

3. Locate your iTunes folder:

By default, the iTunes folder is located in:

Mac OS X: /Users/username/Music

Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\

Windows Vista or Windows 7: \Users\username\My Music\

4. If the iTunes folder is not in the default location listed above then you can find where the iTunes folder is located by following these instructions:

a. Open your iTunes Preferences:

Mac: Choose iTunes > Preferences.

Windows: Choose Edit > Preferences.

b. Click Advanced.
c. The location of your iTunes folder will be listed in iTunes Media folder location box, as pictured below.

5. Drag the iTunes folder to your external hard drive. This can take a while if you have a lot of items.

6. When the transfer is complete, your iTunes Library will have been successfully copied to your external hard drive.

Restoring your iTunes Library backup

When you need to restore your backed up iTunes Library from your external hard drive to your computer, follow these steps:

1. Quit iTunes.
2. Locate your external hard drive.
Mac: On the Desktop or Finder sidebar.

Windows: In My Computer

3. Drag the iTunes folder (backed up earlier) from your external hard drive to whatever location you desire on your internal hard drive. It is recommended that you choose the default location for the iTunes folder, which is:

Mac OS X: /Users/username/Music

Windows XP
: \Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\

Windows Vista or Windows 7: \Users\username\My Music\

4. Open iTunes while holding down the Option key (Mac) or Shift key (Windows).

5. In the resulting dialog, click the Choose Library button.

6. Select the iTunes folder you just moved to the internal hard drive.

7. Click Choose (Mac OS X) or Open (Windows) and then choose the iTunes Library file inside.

After following these steps, iTunes will open and your iTunes Library will be restored.

You can also use his iPod to restore to the new machine if access to the old drive is not an option:

I don't use it either sinno but like you, my kids do.

I hate it with a passion because of it's desire to take control away from the user :no no:

The above guide works perfectly & takes all the mystery that is iTunes away lol

Sharepod is a great free App too for backing up from an iPod ;)

im not really into music in a big way but having apple products you have no choice but to use it. we got ipods, iphones and an ipad
