Wintry weather takes its toll

18th December 2010

The wintry weather is taking its toll on the weekend's fixture list with a number of games postponed.

Six Premier League games have fallen victim of the weather. Chelsea's crunch clash with Manchester United at the top of the table scheduled for Sunday is off and so is Blackpool's encounter with Tottenham.

The match between Wigan and Aston Villa at the DW Stadium has been postponed to 'freak conditions in the town overnight', the Latics have announced.

Liverpool have also confirmed that their evening match against Fulham is off after an assessment of 'prevailing weather conditions'.

Arsenal's game with Stoke City at the Emirates does not go ahead as after heavy snowfall the game has been postponed.

Meanwhile, Birmingham City's clash with Newcastle is cancelled with St Andrews and the surrounding area being covered after 'incessant snow', with the decision being made on health and safety grounds.

In the Championship, Cardiff's home clash with Burnley has been postponed due to safety reasons, while Portsmouth's meeting with Scunthorpe has also been called off.

Millwall's match at The Den against Barnsley is not on as the police have advised the club to cancel the fixture.

Watford's game with Preston at Vicarage Road is also a victim of the cold snap as heavy snowfall in North London has put pay to the tie.

The Scottish Premier League has been hit hard with four top-flight games being called off.

Celtic have been denied the chance to move to the top of the table as their match against Hamilton has been postponed.

Aberdeen's SPL match with Motherwell along with Dundee United's game at St Johnstone has joined the list of weekend casualties.

Rangers' clash with St Mirren was called off due to water damage at Ibrox on Thursday.

League One fixtures in England have also fallen by the wayside after Rochdale's clash with Bournemouth failed a pitch inspection on Friday morning.

And Friday evening's fixture between leaders Brighton & Hove Albion and Notts County was a late casualty due to a frozen pitch at the Withdean Stadium.

Hartlepool's game with Charlton at Victoria Park has been unsurprisingly called off due to a frozen pitch along with Brentford's fixture against Huddersfield.

Walsall's game with Southampton has also been called off, as well as the clashes between Leyton Orient and Plymouth, and Dagenham and Peterborough.

Yeovil against Carlisle will also not go ahead, this time for safety reasons, while Bristol Rovers against Colchester has also been called off due to the weather.

Swindon versus Tranmere, and MK Dons against Oldham have both failed to overcome the weather.

Bury's fixture with Stevenage in League Two is another to be postponed, while Accrington's game against Burton has also fallen victim to the elements.

Hereford's clash with Macclesfield at Edgar Street will not go ahead due to a frozen pitch, and the same goes for Crewe against Bradford, Northampton versus Morecambe, and Torquay against Rotherham.

The meetings between Cheltenham and Stockport, Oxford United and Shrewsbury, Aldershot and Lincoln City, Port Vale and Barnet.

Southend against Wycombe, and Chesterfield's trip to Gillingham have also been postponed.
