Getting into satellite in 2026

Hi all,

I am interested in getting a satellte dish setup, I already have a solid IPTV subscription so this will be more for experimentation and playing around with as a hobby rather than my main source of TV. I am renting so it will need to be mounted on a tripod, luckily there is already some coax running through the wall (at some time it would have been run up to the roof for the aerial but has been cut at some point and is just sitting there unused) so i can get the signal indoors to an E2 receiver that i was playing around with that I can use for sat.

What size dish should I be looking at? I would like to play around and pull in international sats (happy to just move the dish around manually as this is all just for fun), I know none of the premium channels on 28.2e will clear these days but can any channels be cleared on other sats with oscam these days? or will i need to look into a viark or something like that?

I am located in Hertfordshire.

That's what's available, probably other stuff as well depending on what provider you go with.
First thing you want to do is go where your thinking of putting the dish, then get your compass out and check were south is, Then check 45 degrees east and west for clear line of sight

Thanks, pointing south i can only go east about 40 degrees before pointing at a wall that is likely going to block the signal, going west there is a tree that might cause some issues but other than that its clear all the way. I cant imagine i will be able to get the dish as high as you normally would on a house with a tripod so not sure if thats going to cause issues.

I have mine at ground level at the end of the garden mounted to the old bin shed. can you not dig a small hole and mount a pole in the ground? Having a motor setup will be a lot better than manually trying to move the dish.

No doubt I could, honestly just thought tripod would be easier at least for now, If i wanted to play around with the location at a later date I easily could. The garden is south facing so from my understanding i should be as close to the wall as possible? I would like a motor setup eventually but thought better to start with a manual setup and get it all working and get my head around it all before diving into that haha

You need to get yourself a dish and lnb and have a play about then, get a 1.2m then it can go onto the motor when you decide to get one. shame you dont live near me cause i have a few 80 cm triax dish knocking about what you could have had one.

Huge shame! As for getting these channels clear, what kind of line do I need, just a pan european line? Or would i need a viark or gtmedia box to clear them. Sky DE sounds interesting since i had that through IPTV at one point and a lot of the channels included english audio.

If you just want to play around you can get camping dish kits, that comes with a tripod ect. I've got a couple in the garage and one is much better than the other and comes with a folding dish and an arm that folds out. It comes with its own tripod. It would be good for 28.2 and 19e and many more and just loosen the bolts and move it around. Link it to a cheap e2 box and a euro line. Remember it will need to be connected to the internet at all times.

I did have a look at those, i dont really mind starting out with a small dish and upgrading later but the tripods on those look to be super small and flimsy (makes sense for something that would only be used temporarily when camping) and replacing both the tripod and the dish when i eventually do want to upgrade seemed like a waste to me, id like to just do one. Already got an E2 box (zgemma H9S, had it running an IPTV just to try out E2 and all the skins). Not worried about the coax run from the aerial socket to the outside as if it ends up being no good i can just pull it out and put a new RG6 coax in and the landlord would never notice the house is already full of dodgy DIY 🤣🤣

Just a euro line for the h9 and use Oscan-emu. Use the latest one @Ferret. has posted in the downloads section.

Aren’t 3pm football games encrypted, is it possible to get around it? I’m really interested in satellite TV and wondering what’s realistic. I’m in a 4th‑floor end flat with good sky: rear balcony south, front balcony north, decent visibility. What setups do people usually recommend?

You could also try a multi lnb set up.
Then you wouldn't have to move the dish.
I tried this on a tripod and 80 cm dish, was able to get 13e, 16e, 19.2e and 28.2e.
This might actually be a better way to go for me, motorized for sure has a cool factor to it but having 4 sats permanently tuned in would make the whole setup super simple. Only concern i have would be getting the signals for 4 sats into the house over one cable, assuming i can use a switch?

Cant comment on football, only sport I watch is the F1 and IPTV covers that for me. But with an oscam line you seem to be able to clear a lot of what is available on the european sats. Seems to be just Sky UK and Sky IT you cant clear (out of the major providers anyway). Wouldnt shock me if you can find 3pm games either on one of the foreign channels or from a feed.

Most of us use 16e supersport or 19.2e sky de for premier ship games. Both available on a euroline for enigma 2 receivers.

4 LNB in to a diseqc switch at the dish end then one cable into your house.

Got the dish, cables run and everything but really struggling to pull anything in. Starting with 28.2e as i figured it would be the easiest. Got the tripod level and got the right azimuth (according to the satfinder android app), But im struggling to get the angle high enough. It's saying i need to be at 25.1 degrees, but the dish seems to max out at 19.

Post a picture of it, do you have a sat finder tool?

Sadly i dont have a sat finder. I think i might be getting a different issue though before alignment as the AGC value is 0 on the signal finder on my box and I have read that this should be above 0 even if the dish is not aligned correctly. I have tried with another cable and still getting the same issue.
