Just had an xray and hip is shot and needs an urgent replacement and on a list for now.

No idea of whats 2 come 2 to 3 days in hospital then out and will need aftercare for 2 weeks i assume to build my strength back again .
Mobility is bad so thinking they wont let me home as living alone and needing physio to build up my strength to even get up the stairs again to bed.
No idea on where i might need to go after the hospital when released.

Anybody had one done and what are the challenges to be conquered.

Bloke in my pub had one last year.
He's 71, still working as a bricklayer, he was a bit sore for a few days but still went out with use of a stick.
He was back at work ten days later and walks fine now and still working.

Can't help with immediate after care
But, my neighbour had a new hip two years ago ; she had a lot of help with extra bannister and various rails ; aid to get a suitable chair (correct height etc) and is in line for an aid to get in/out of bath
I think it was from our local council but not sure : Don't be scared to ask for help from the various agencies

Hi, I had the hip done 10 Feb 2026, I was in for 2 nights but that was because I travelled 100 miles, the normal is one night these days or even a day. I'll send you a PM.

Been there and done that a good while ago as i have had an extra hand rail on stairs which helps and a few extra hand rails in shower when feeling giddy but could do with some more behind a towel rail when exciting shower encloser to steady myself up more.
Have a new orthopedic chair that is comfy and had to make it easier to get out of by raising it up more.
No bath only showers and have a shower chair for downstairs use as on solid ground.
Raised toilet seats now needed 2 frames with arms to get up from it as lost all strength from legs.

Yes local Health care came out to visit and offered me what they thought i needed. A while ago i bought 2 short aluminium ramps that got fitted onto another ramp to decrease the angle of a 10" garage step to gain entry into the house and using a rollator to lean on lessens the hardship.
