Why is one of my message recipients receiving my emails in MIME format?

Hello.
Could anyone help please. One of my email recipients has reported that he receives all my emails in MIME format.
I haven't got a clue what this means in technical terms but having had one sent back to show as an example, it is definitely a problem.
He is always one of multiple recipients but nobody else is reporting a problem.

My ISP is AOL and my email client is Thunderbird 14.0. My Friends ISP is NTL (UK) and uses Outlook Express.

If anyone can point us in the direction of a solution it would be greatly appreciated.

Thunderbird's behavior when replying to a message depends upon what version you use. For example, when you reply to a message it may switch to whatever format is specified by "prefers to receive messages formatted as" in the recipients entry in address book unless you set some other preferences.

Thank you for your rapid response. What I would like to know though is how do I stop it from happening?

As I had said, this particular recipient is one of a group of twelve in a mass mail list (ie jokes) but is the only one to have this problem.

Check the "prefers to receive messages formatted as" for that particular recipients entry in your address book settings.

Thank you for taking the time to reply Gman. (y)

I have checked all my personal address book contacts details and the "prefers to receive messages formatted as" entry for all my contacts is "Uknown".

From this, would it be reasonable to conclude that my friends Outlook Express has a rogue setting against me as a contact? If this is the case any further advice and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It's quite possible that the issue is indeed on your friends end but you should be able to verify that by trying the following.

1. Get your friend to check their setting for receiving preferences on their email client.

2. Send your friend a new email (Standalone recipient & not part of a group) & check to see how that is received.

3. Change the "prefers to receive messages formatted as" in your friends email address entry at your end from "Unknown" to "HTML" and see if that changes the way they receive from you.

4. If all that fails you could try deleting that particular email entry from your address book & getting your friend to delete yours from their address book and create both again from new.
