Is there a way to record UK TV, that I can then access/download away from home/abroad ???

Hi

I wasn’t sure where to post this so please excuse if considered in the wrong forum.

The crux of the question is…..Is there a way to record UK TV, that I can then access/download away from home/abroad ???

I work away/abroad a lot and VPNs get blocked and torrents aren’t always available

If so what do you suggest, could you nudge me in the right direction to find out more?

I’ve got an old Synology NAS I could use purely for this, I also have a Zgemma H.2H up and running if this can be used/combined at all.

I don't mind buying a standalone PVR box if one can recommended as most of the stuff would probably be on Freeview anyway

Thanks

I'm sure there's more suitable ways of doing things but when I used to work in security a few years ago and wanted to watch things i'd recorded, I set up a fixed password for TeamViewer on my computer at home then I could access my desktop from work then i'd simply upload whatever I wanted to a cloud provider on the home computer and download it on the work computer... long winded for sure but it works!

What you're asking would probably need adjustments to your router / ports which i'm clueless about in the whole, sorry.

do you have a fixed IP at home?
if so its dead easy,
I can access my FNAS from anywhere, just put your recordings on that,
it can be done with a non fixed ip, but you need an outside source to redirect your request back to your home ip, it doesnt cost much, but more hassle than paying for a fixed ip at home, and not always as reliable

Thanks for your suggestions...

Hmmmmmm yeah maybe IPTV is the way to go. Onby thing is, working away, the net isn't always brilliant. At least if I can download from a file at home, I can always pause and restart.

I dont think it is fixed, just a standard VM connection

ask them if you can upgrade to fixed, they might offer it for a few extra quid a month,
or,
go business , they normally give you fixed ip for business if you ask for it, costs a bit more though.

OK ill look into it. The next thing is, how do I get recordings onto the NAS??? Is it a case of using the Zgemma and save to a network address rather than a USB?

Im looking into that myself,
so all my recordings are in one place,
from downloads , tv recordings, box recordings etc
at the minute I've just been transferring stuff over the network

what i normally do is record onto internal or external hdd which is mounted ext3 -4,also running on box is samba which makes it visible on network.
nas drive is picked up when scanning home network and is also mounted.

Record to your NAS, set up Plex on the NAS, point Plex to the folders it's recording to, best way I can think of.

I like the sound of that, as I want to turn as many devices off as possible when away. so this would just leave the NAS, zgemma and router.

So how do you record directly to/get the recordings on to the NAS from the Zgemma?

I haven’t done it myself so this is just an educated guess, but you’d have to set up a network mount on your Zgemma, then set your record location as a folder you’ve mounted. The Plex part is the easy part.

Alternatively, somewhat counterintuitive but if you already have a hard drive attached to your box, if it’s possible to mount that to your NAS over the network you wouldn’t even have to bother recording to the NAS directly as you’d be able to point Plex to the network mounted Zgemma.

Yeah I was trying to minimise the amount of manual moving i would have to do incase im on a bad connection, to save time

OK, what about a different route? Is it possible to log in to the Zgemma remotely? So if the recordings were on an attached USB or drive, could the recordings just be extracted directly from that, so leaving the NAS out of the equation?

It is, but I wouldn’t really advise it. Depending on the way you went about it you’re either going to expose your home network to the world or go through a ridiculous amount of pratting about.

Understood! On the norm are they generally quite secured? Think mine goes via the VPN on the router, but stupidly its the first time I've thought about if others can access my network viz the zgemma

Put it this way, to access your home network remotely you (generally speaking) have to open ports on your router. Unless you do this you’re no less secure than anyone else, probably more so if using a VPN.

The only other thing I can think is use your NAS as a VPN server if that’s possible (but that can be a faff as well at times).

Honestly the best way to go about it as far as I can tell is with Plex.

No need.. just use a dynamic dns service like duckdns.org
