2 Zgemma boxes in one house

Does anyone run 2 zgemma's in one house, assume you would need 2 lots of gifts.

what can you do... Can you watch recordings from one box on the other, and so you can ultimately record 4 (or more) programmes at the same time and watch them on either unit.

I am thinking a upstairs and downstairs box.

Depending on your server provider. you may be able to run a second box on the same line. you would need to ask your provider, but most on here do offer multi room on there line deals.

You can ftp to the box and move recordings from one box to the other, like has been said a lot of providers use one line for multiroom but ask first, if not you can use a separate line on each.

All setup and working.

2 boxes. Each can record to its own USB flash drive and also to a network wd mycloud hard drive.

Each can playback from
1 - it's own USB flash drive
2 - the wd mycloud network drive
3 - the other boxes USB flash drive

If anyone wants info let me know but all seems good and can record many things all at once and also watch them around the network and even move them around the network if I need to.

Here is a quick version - once I have run through it for a little while and checked everything works really well i will do a more thorough version.

Reason for doing this:

Previously I have used my SKY box connected to the lounge TV, but also with the RF2 output being connected to a signal amplifier/distribution unit had other TV in though able to view the sky box.
This was achieved by running a cable from RF2 out to the distribution splitter, then onwards to each TV.
The result was each TV received both the main TV aeriel input from the roof, the SKY signal and with use of magic eyes there was the ability to control the sjy box.
Only downside was the picture was analogue not digital.

Moving to the zgemma I tried a couple of solutions to get similar result. The main solution being to record to a network harddrive instead of locally on the box USB flash.
This works well, and smart TV's can playback teh content.
downsides were if you recorded a HD programme - Eastenders on BBC1 HD for example, the narrator audio was the main audio stream and the smart TV didn't have an option to change it.
There is the option to use a android box/firestick to run kodi and access the zgemma, but all seemed a bit hit and miss and painful. Ok for me, but no good for the wife who liekd the simplicity of using a sky remote in teh bedroom or conservatory to control the bx in the usual way, jsut the same as you do in the lounge....

SO.... My solution...

Run 2 zgemma (or more) and by network mounting the 'other' zgemma you can access either devices HDD.

To do it, you get both set up as normal.
then menu/setup/network
network browser and find the other zgemma in there - you need to know the ip as both boxes will be in the list and both called zgemma
mount the root folder (not HDD) and you are prompted for the user and password (root and blank)
Then when you have a movie recorded on the USB HDD on the second box to access it from the first you need to go into FILE LIST, then Yellow button for locations, go into other and then locate the zgemme/root/hdd/movies folder.
Next time you look in FILE LIST the folder will be there already as one of the number options.
Do the same on the other box too so you can operate either zgemma to access the 'other' HDD.

All seems ok, although only really tested very quickly.
I can watch a file back on box 1, then on box 2 start watching the same file back from a different point. Rewind/Fast Forward etc.
The audio options and markers seem to work fine
Need to properly check the delete and how it works with the trash/deleted folder.

You can move a file from one box to the other if you wanted to for some reason.

I still have the network drive so I can also watch that, record to that and moved files to and from that on either zgemma.

That's a great little guide cheers.
It's got me thinking wether I could connect to another zgemma box at my mother in law's house from my zgemma .

Cheers

I doubt it, but might be possible. It needed to be on the network for the browser to find the second box.
Cheers I'll have a look into that it's just I've set a new h2s up at there house and would like a way to remotely connect if there was any problems...which there probably will be :)

Richsimpson, you mention using a WD box in your configuration. I loads of space available on a WD EX4 box I have on my network. Is there a way to use this storage space but not reformat the device etc? I'm guessing if I achieved this I could use smart TV's in other rooms to play back the content on this HDD? Thanks for your help.

If the wd ex4 is a nas then you can add through network browser and both boxes can record to it.

I did a video on YouTube and posted it on here a while back. Search for that. And use the mount option as fstab mode - mount on boot.

Not around at the moment to check on the box for specific settings.
