I'm not really up to date with android boxes, I've been trying to download a few APK apps via the box, but everytime it's telling me (download is not supported on this device yet) frustrating the hell out of me
 
Not ever app is suitable for each android box. The nvidia shield is android tv and does not come with a play store. You can add alternative stores as such but not all apps work. If it wont allow you to download the apps you could download the apk on a pc and then put it on a usb stick and load it via es explorer or something similar. Sometimes some apps dont show up on the menu system but load via goint into the settings and select apps.
 
The play store told me Apps were not supported on my droidbox.
Steamlink was one i installed it through another source and it runs perfect.
As bazcfc has said go in to the settings on your box and make sure unknown sources is allowed.
If your worried about security use Malwarebytes on your box.

Can always turn it back off once installed what you need to install but good shout mate
 
What box? make/model? android version? how long you had the box?

If you have an old box, that might be part of the issue.

Purchased in January this year, for a 2nd box for bedroom, only just took it out the box last night as never had time.

All them Apps should install no problem on that box android 9 and amlogic chip, my droidbox is Android 7.1 and uses amlogic chip also.

Yeah I did done digging on it before going for it, people said it would be up for the job. I will have another mess about with it in a bit, as the missus is driving me spare and need some space before I Bury her in the bloody garden

Follow the advice from above posts as @bazcfc said go in to your settings make sure unknown sources is ticked.
If playstore isn't installing them, try apitode or one of the other sources available.
Let us know how you get on.
 
are you sure you are onto the apk download link and not just the folder the apk is within, this can happen when using downloader as the next link to get to the apk is way down the page, so needs scrolling to
