What's new

annoying side bar

Hi, do a google search on my friends laptop and open one of the options, now, you not only open a site but also a side bar called related searches which throws open sites with downloads and surveys and other crap that hinders you from doing anything. What is causing this? and how do I get rid of it? can anybody help please? I hope I've explained the problem enough, many thanks.

The “Related Searches” sidebar with white T logo you are seeing on the browser is part of an adware called WebCake. Previously, another adware called Conduit is issuing the same thing. Follow the procedures below to remove that annoying sidebar.

Uninstall “Related Searches” Sidebar from Microsoft Windows (and WebCake if it exists)
1. Open Windows Control Panel.
2. Choose Programs (Uninstall a Program).
3. It will open a list of installed programs, find Webcake, Conduit, or any suspicious term and click on ‘Uninstall’.

How to remove “Related Searches” Sidebar on Internet Explorer
1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. On top menu, go to Tools > Manage Add-ons.
3. On right panel look for Webcake, Conduit, or any suspicious entry and click on Disable button to stop the service.
4. You may now restart Internet Explorer.

How to Uninstall “Related Searches” Sidebar in Google Chrome
1. Open Google Chrome Internet browser.
2. Click on Settings (three horizontal bars icon or wrench icon for old versions) or ‘Customize and Control Google Chrome’ button located on top right corner of the browser.
3. Click on Tools > Extensions from the drop-down list.
4. You can see Webcake or Conduit from the list of installed extensions; remove it by clicking on the ‘Trash’ icon.
5. Please restart Google Chrome.

How to Remove “Related Searches” Sidebar in Mozilla Firefox
1. Open Mozilla Firefox Internet browser.
2. On top menu, go to Tools > Add-ons.
3. Remove Browser Webcake or Conduit from the list of installed add-ons.
4. Restart Mozilla Firefox.

..Hi I'm not at my friends computer now, but I remember looking for webcake and conduit this morning and could not find any.

..Hi, tried that, there is no "webcake or conduit" to be disabled and nothing suspicious to be disabled, hate that - when you expect to find something and its not there, any other ideas for getting rid? thanks.

The fact that you say you can't find any trace of this in the Add\Remove programs or the add-on, extension or plugins section of the Browser, I suspect that at some stage someone attempted to delete this malware and didn't do it correctly?

You can be sure that there are active traces of this in your friends registry. You could search the registry manually and remove all traces related to webcake and conduit but you would need to be both careful & confident before venturing in there.

Alternatively, I would suggest that you run both Malwarebytes followed by Ccleaner and if that does not sort you? you should run HijackThis and copy and paste the results here in a new post for analysis.

You can be sure that there are active traces of this in your friends registry. You could search the registry manually and remove all traces related to webcake and conduit but you would need to be both careful & confident before venturing in there.

Alternatively, I would suggest that you run both Malwarebytes followed by Ccleaner and if that does not sort you? you should run HijackThis and copy and paste the results here in a new post for analysis.

after removal run another malwarebytes scan and post results.i would also download, update, and run superantispyware and let it remove anything it finds.after this run hijack this and post another log.also let us know how the computer is running. just a side note,i dont see an antivirus program installed.windows defender isnt going to cut it there.i suggest avast free av.its lite on resources and very effective. cheers Al. also i recommend just about any browser but ie.i use firefox nitely on my 64bit w7.whatever you use a great addon to install is adblock plus to keep those popups away.

End of file - 7602 byteso Al, did as you suggested, computer running slightly better thanks.

Hi, I did this and the results are a bit confusing, its highlihgted in red (danger) avast antivirus that Al suggested I install and run, anyway the sidebar issue has been resolved, I have installed Firefox and things are better. Thanks.

didnt quite get that bit about what was highlited in red. what was it and what scan? good you got rid of the sidebar tho.Al.

no,that would be a false positive.hjt isnt perfect. it gives a lot of funny readings on 64 bit systems like all the entries with file missing.funny tho,i run avast and it doesnt show up flagged on any hjt scan i do.

Rockford, why don't you post the scan log flagging Avast & we'll see if any malware has altered it in any way
