Block Firestick upgrades

The important information

Vega OS apps use a .vpkg file extension. If it’s not obvious yet, none of the existing Fire TV apps with a .apk extension will run on Fire TVs running Vega OS. Amazon has said that “only apps from the Amazon Appstore are available for download” on the new Vega OS-based Fire TV Stick 4K Select. This likely means that an “Install from unknown sources” option will not be present on Vega OS devices, so apps like my Downloader app will not be able to sideload anything on a Vega OS device, even if I created a Vega OS version of Downloader.

It will be possible to sideload apps onto a Vega OS Fire TV device through a command line interface similar to Android’s ADB utility. Vega OS-based Fire TVs will have Developer Options in the “My Fire TV” settings menu, and you will be able to enable a Developer Mode that allows app sideloading from a computer through a USB connection. Unlike Fire OS-based Fire TVs, enabling Developer Mode in Vega OS will require the device to reboot each time.

Yep this is what happened last time and the reason i ditched the Fire Stick i had.
They will always have a way back into the device.

My 4k max on OS 8.1.5.3 isn't working with this hack. I get "error connection refused" when trying to setup LM settings or trying to disable the ota updates, etc.

I think they plugged the loophole recently?
I did mine a few weeks back and it's on 8.1.4.9

I think that'll work, but they could change the update URL at any time :)
I read that these urls haven't changed in years. He said he would update the list as and when, but i got given a couple more when i asked question in Copilot (amzdigitaldownloads.edgesuite.net & a1703.d.akamai.net). Also, i have had to always manually install updates on Firesticks.

Important. For anyone trying to use this, Just found out that if you have Adguard running on your firestick, it stops url filtering on your router from working. You will have to turn Adguard off, or block the Amazon urls via adguard on that specific device.

his exploit only works with fire tv OS 7 and 8.

According to recent posts in the xda-developers forum, Amazon is confirmed to be rolling out a Fire OS 8.1.5.3 update for Fire TV devices for that patches the vulnerability. It’s likely that a patch for devices running Fire OS 7 is also on the way, if it’s not already rolling out.

8.1.5.3 is not working. I think the easiest way is just block through router which the vast majority can and keep checking for updates for any new urls amazon may use, to send updates to device.
