Can someone explain what the MXQ box does ?

Hi guys and gals.

I just have a quick question, I have read the thread about best boxes to buy over on the satellite category, which mentioned the zgemma amongst many others (I myself have the zgemma h2.s) but a neighbour of ours has a MXQ box, when asked, they state they get all the Sly channels, but, to my knowledge it isn't plugged into any sat dishes, so, is my neighbour mistaken and is the MXQ box a glorified IPTV player using Kodi or is it something else entirely, and if so, what exactly is it ?

I have no understanding of an "android box", how does that differ from the zgemma h2.s ?

I am extremely new to all this, never realised there was so many different boxes, it's a minefield, would appreciate being given some clarity.

Thanks.

It's the same operating system you find on mobile phones like Samsungs etc

It's a little multi media box to connect to your TV you can stream movies & music through it via the Internet.

You can buy Android boxes on Amazon. Like has been said, Android is the operating system and you can put apps on them like Kodi, Youtube and IPTV which is probably what your neighbour is using. They've got an IPTV subscription and are running it throught the Android box.

So, it's not the same as a zgemma box in that you can't get all the Sly channels like you can on the sat boxes ?

My neighbor seems to believe that they get every channel, but, I cannot see how.

They have kodi on it as well as a web viewer and a video chat app and loads of games.

In addition, I don't understand, I have IPTV player as a plugin on my zgemma, but, I don't pay for anything, so, what is this IPTV subscription thing that I keep hearing about ?

The zgemma is a satellite and or cable receiver. The channels are received through the dish or cable and the internet is only used to decrypt them, using your line. IPTV comes completely down the internet, no dish or cable required. You pay for a sub and you need a device capable of displaying the channels, like an Android box. There's a section on here for people to request IPTV subs.

As said its android same operating system as Some phones. They do alot and yes you can have premium channels but unlike the zgemma they are streamed and not from a dish.

Well that's the free IPTV and you get what you pay for. It's okay but you probably won't get Sky channels on that and if you did find some the public links would be quickly blocked. Paying for a sub gives you private access to a dedicated system which is much harder to take down and so is reliable.

Ah, well, I have all the sky channels through the line I paid for, so, I wouldn't require an IPTV sub, I just use the IPTV player to watch films and tv shows, that's the right way to do it isn't it ?

I tried using google, it's always my first port of call, but, struggled when trying to compare boxes, so, I thought to myself, I know what, those extremely helpful and friendly guys on Techkings can help me out, and, lo and behold, you did, thanks again, I love this place.

Hahaha, indeed, tbh been a techie for 25+ years, so, I feel right at home amongst all you guys, just been struggling getting my head round all these boxes and the differences between them, I only recently found out they existed, wish I knew earlier.

IPTV still a long way to go and too expensive, for day to day use by the family in the living room. Stick to enigma2 and the cheaper more stable lines system while we still can! ;)

Okay, next question flying your way as fast as an unladen swallow....

What the smeg is enigma2 ?

Seen it mentioned a fair bit, what we need on here is a wiki on what all these words mean, like Kodi, Enigma2, IPTV and so on.
