Checking if cable is live

why would you go to the trouble of buying a box off ebay when you could have just ordered a box, live or not you can always take out a minimum sub to get it going.

I assumed it would indicate to me whether or not the line is live... mb

I got the box to cheaply test the line.
I already have IPTV and if not live, would've just stick with that instead of get VM

I also managed to get my hands on a multimeter, is there any way to test using this?

All i could find was videos on testing the continuity of the cable rather than if it was live.

I used a multimeter on my vermin line, but it was such a long time ago, and i'm sure i got a millivolt reading m8, because i had a telephone line with them, then, that made my line "live"

No the virmin box should still be able to show channels 1 to 5 and the vm previews channel on channel 100, as they are not encrypted. All other channels are encrypted. Buying a ex sub box solely to test the line isn't a bad idea as if the line is live the box will still boot up and show channels 1-5 only. the older the box the better usually. AP52 usually means no signal. It's normal for these boxes to show the signal as poor in the diagnostic menus where there is no signal. Sounds like the cable you have has probably been disconnected from either the brown/grey box on your outside wall or the street cabinet. Check the box on the outside of your house first. If you're lucky and see it disconnected in that box you can reconnect it and test again. If the latter, then it may be an idea to sign up for the most basic bb package from vm, that way you can guarantee your line will be live.

I don't think this is the case for a genuine TiVo box.
That may well be the case. The op has a V-HD box so it should be able to boot up on a live line and show channels 1-5. I remember reading somewhere years ago that it was a legal requirement that channels 1-5 on vm had to be free to view without encryption. Not sure if this still applies on the current tivo boxes though.

EDIT
Can confirm this still works with the cisco and samsung branded tivo boxes as i've just connected up 2 ex subbed tivo boxes to my line (One at a time of course). They booted up and showed channels 1-5.

Turned out the cable was live all along!

Even though TV with cable tuner did not show any signal!

Thanks for the help guys

99% of the time they are tbh ... if you can't get hold of a TiVo box with a proper sub on it to test then just go ahead and buy the box you intended to and hook it up, if it works - sorted, but if not then take out a sub and get it connected then cancel within 14 days.
