Correct way to backup

What is the right way to back up everything and reinstall.

i have changed various settings on the fantastic wooshbuild, but want to keep playing about safe in the knowledge I can get back to tonight's version.

is it
menu/software management/backup image

or do I also need to backup system settings?

is image the whole thing and would then be possible to flash from that by putting it in a Zgemma folder on a USB?

menu/software management/backup image

Creating a backup will make a mirror image of your box as of the time you make it. Current channel, EPG contents, channels, line details the lot.

You don't need to backup your settings but if you want to feel free.

It will create 2 folders on your usb when creating an image:

zgemma
full_backup_zgemma (or close to that) and you may also end up with a timeshift ad movie folder.

You can delete everything EXCEPT the zgemma folder. If you want to continuing using that USB for testing, just rename zgemma to zgemma-backup or something. It will stop your box flashing.

One last thing. To restore your image, for ease, open the zgemma\h3 folder and rename the noforce file to force. This will then boot your box automatically when it sees a folder called zgemma on the stick.

I have tried to backup my image and have got this message. I am using openatv and selected: menu - setup - software management - back up image
GetFileAttachment

The usb is inserted into the front of the box, does that make a difference as I didn't think it would? The usb has been used previously to instal wooshmans v1 image and I had no issues with that so the usb is fine.
Any ideas where I have gone wrong?

have you added a notepad file called backupstick.txt ?

That worked for me last night, I left the usual USB in that is the EPG and Timeslip files, put the other USB in the front (after adding the notepad file) and it was fine. I left other stuff on the stick too. Took about 5 mins total to create the image file.

No I didn't, to be honest didn't know i had to before trying.
I unplugged my usb hdd as didn't think it would work with something else plugged in.
Thanks for letting me know, will give that a try shortly

didn't seem to like the front usb - changed the filename to what you said but still says no usb found. Guessing the front usb port doesn't work?

Now tried the rear usb and still saying the usb cannot be found. What format does the usb need to be for me to save an image? Currently it is fat32

mine was fat32 too, added a notepad file as described and plugged it in, went through the option to get to backup image and then I think it was the green button for USB (instead of HDD which is another colour - red maybe?) and that was it.

Otherwise I think you can back it up to the HDD - which is probably the USB you use for recording unless you have a hard drive plugged in, and then its another colour in the menu and you can get a image on there - then you could FTP into the box to drag it back off again and put on your PC for safe keeping.

Make sure the notepad file is spealt right. doesnt need any content, jsut a file on the USB - but not inside a folder.

Drag the wooshman v1 backup folder to desktop delete the other files on usb open the wooshman v1 backup and you should see a folder called zgemma place that on the usb then try to flash it with that

not trying to reflash image here, trying to create back up of one I currently have in use. wooshman v1 with modifications to suit me.

I used the usb methos and worked ok, but did have to create the file

Did you have anything else on your usb or was it empty?

not sure why but cant see the original image you put on (i could earlier) nor the later one showing what is on your USB stick.

Try it with a clean USB stick - only the notepad file on it and see if that works.

UPDATE

First time I have used a backup, I had to open the zgemma folder that is created during the image backup, and inside are 4 items, one is now called "noforce", rename it to "force" as otherwise the box wouldn't re flash the image. instead it would say USB - UPDT

Once that file was renamed I got my image settings and line all working straight away.

freshly format a usb stick
open notpad. new file. save this blank file as "backupstick.txt"
copy this file to your usb.
Place the usb in your rear zgemmas usb ports.

go to create backup image.
menu...setup...software management...backup image... usb

wait for it to create backup image.

Once finished remove usb stick. open on a computer
There will be 2 folders. A dated one and zgemma folder

You only need the zgemma folder. This is your back up image. No other files are needed from any other image.

You can reflash your box with this zgemma folder as it is.

** this really isn't that difficult **

if your backup image is set to noforce, you are required to press the standby button on your box when it says USB on the display. This is the whole idea of noforce.

What I do on vix is creat the backup on my hard drive then ftp to media/hdd/imagebackups then ftp openatv zipfile once on laptop the zgemma folder is inside there then use the force file from another backup to place in mine and delete no force.
