i have a home built {not by me lol } pc desktop that is getting sluggish,i have run and cleaned virus and errors with a system boot check and checked both the ide and sata drives,i got a loan of a pc check disc and it stopped after 1.hr 41mins suggesting a hard drive issue, have to run it again after i did the virus scan and found a few errors as not fixable.i have an amd semperon tm processor 3000+ so i wondered if the chip is old and outdated or what if i could upgrade :pop smiley:running xp pro sp3.

Hi what I would do if want to keep your existing PC is install new Hard drive (your old one is knacked) and max out the Memory for the Mobo then install win 7 sorted !

dont want windows 7 as i have that on pc downstairs lol,and funny the fault kinda points to the newer sata drive that was fitted a number of yrs ago, will try and run the pc check tonight to see what happens.

the AMd cpu is a good processor, do a surface scan on your sata HD even new drives have faults and if its good do a clean install of of XP, but I would recommend a Ram upgrade especially if your running XP.

yes stuck in reverse gear going backwards ,i was not too sure if you can update the chip or not as some of the ones i was looking at came with brown underwear:whacko:£1200 must be a batch lot i hopeROFL

yep that would be for a tray full of the Bu@@ers !! lol. depending on your mobo and the age of it you could swap the cpu for a faster one or if you are into it.....overclock it, only clocked an old desktop once and must say the results can be quite satisfying.

right problem looks like its in the maxtor ide drive as there seems to be a bad sector as its not reading but freezing on a pc disk program, think its from 2006 as when bought so had its time.wondered what a mobo was lol
256mb geforce 6200

Thats your graphics card cacti. mobo is used short for motherboard :)

If your going to upgrade the CPU you would need to make sure it compatible with the motherboard by checking out the manufacturers webpage or maybe someone with a similar "mobo" has already upgraded that you might find through a search. Just beacuse it has the same socket type, type A or 462 (number of pins) in your case doesnt mean it would be a straight swap. It could be but best to check first.

Getting a new hard drive to replace the old one then try for a 7200rpm drive that could improve some performance for you, 2gig of ram is plenty but then you can buy better grade ram if you want to go that step further, check out crucial.com to and run the test there to see what upgraded ram your board would support.

Nowhere near as good as todays standards :)

If all your doing is browsing on it then just grab yourself a new cheap harddrive, you have the max amount of ram supported possibly running at 333mhz, the board supports up to 400mhz. That would be the cheapest upgrade you could get.
A new cpu may give you that little extra push in performance but it wouldnt even be noticable if you were just browsing.

If i had it i wouldnt upgrade anything unless you were willing to just keep the case itself and upgrade EVERYTHING :) $$$$

yes added plenty of stuff to download loads ROFL dont think i started yet,so just get another hard drive, with all the scans and deletions it is running better but worried i may lose my desktop icons again due to problem.:peace:,need to set up my newer asus as backup so i can be ready if its needed.
