Hello is it safe to deleat all duplicated files on my PC hope you can help because there are loads of them thanks take care best regards Roy.

Provided that they are all duplicates and none of them are actual shortcuts it should be fine. (shortcuts are normally denoted by the inclusion of an arrow on the file icon).

These are two programs that will identify dulicates for you,

DoubleKiller is a fast and easy to use application for finding and removing duplicate files.

Fast Duplicate File Finder FREEWARE will help you find fast all duplicate files in a folder and its sub folders. The application will compare the content of your files so it will find duplicates even if they are using different file names.

RE: safe to deleet all duplicated files

Roy

Definitely not. You should only delete duplicate files that are you created (videos, mp3, jpeg, ...)
You should skip over the windows directory
This can be done using the tool Directory Report
www dot file-utilities dot com

If you are very uncomfortable with it you should start by doing all the folders and NOT the C:\ drive itself.

Leaving the C:\Windows directory alone will insure that you don't accidentally delete any of the needed operating system files.

What has caused you to visit this issue anyway?

I just thought my PC needed a cleanout to speed it up a little I am not sure what to do I need all the help I can get cheers take care

All you will really achieve by deleting duplicate files is the freeing up of some hard drive space. It won't really improve the performance of your system by anything noticeable.

Maybe you should start by defragmenting your hard drive?

This won't hurt your system at all,

Go to Auslogic and download their Disk Defragmenter utility. (HERE)

Install & run it (refuse anything else they may offer you during install), then restart your machine.

Thanks for that I am defraging now is there anything else I can do cheers really apreciate your help take care

What Operating System are you using?

Defraging your system on a regular basis is about the best along with uninstalling any crap you no longer use.

Clearing out the duplicate files will free up some disk space too but if you are not comfortable with it, leave it alone.

Having said that, once you run the duplicate file finder, just look through it's list of found duplicates, if there's anything you are unsure of in that list, just untic it and delete the rest. You should be fine at that 👍

Defragmentation Explained

Have you ever noticed how your computer seems to run slower? and slower each week? Did you think it was just your imagination, Nah! Your computer really is getting slower because, your hard drive needs to be defragmented or defragmentation of your hard drive, same, same.

Any time you view a web site, download an MP3, install a game, or create a new file, your computer is saving that data in bits on your hard drive. As you add more data, the bits are moved around and separated from one another common on all hard drives.

Not to worry!!

After some time these files are spread all over the hard drive in tiny fragments. This slows down your computer. That is where "Defragmentation" comes in. Defragmenting the hard disk will put all the different fragments together in one place, which allows the computer to save time. When you run a defragmentation, it puts the pieces back together, so files, programs and such load faster. It' probably a good idea for the average user to defrag once every 1-2 months at the very least. I usually run mine every two weeks.

You can solve the problem easily by defragmentation of your hard drive. If your using a Windows operating system, it comes with a manual defragmentation tool built in (but it's not that great).

However, depending on when you first run the defragmentation program it could take some time to complete depending, on the size of your hard drive to process the amount of data to complete the fragmentation process.

Even if you do not install games or download programs or files regularly, fragmentation can still be a serious problem on your system, especially if you receive a large volume of emails each day.

Each time you read one of those emails, you are adding more chunks of data to your hard drive and slowing down your computer even more.

If you get just ten emails a day, it would not take long for you to start seeing a significant decrease in your system's efficiency. The bottom line is that defragmentation is a serious problem, but it is also an easy problem to solve.

If you don't mind using the "built in" defragmentation tool in your operating system, then you should definitely be using it on a regular basis. Once you do it once or twice you kick yourself for not doing it sooner, it is not that difficult of a task to perform.

If you want to run the defragmentation process automatically just do a Search in Google "Defrag" or what ever search engine you use and you'll find dozens of programs to choose from.

Thanks I am not sure about anything on this PC I am runing Vista ,I just want to keep my PC as clean as I can but as I say I really need some help to do it , thanks again if you got any more programms that will help me I will be glad of them cheers take care roy.

Hi roysrolls,

Here is some basic straight forward easy to follow stuff that I would advise you to try first to help speed up your PC before moving on to more advanced stuff.

1) Ensure hard drive space is not approaching limit (right click C: and check pie chart)

2) Run Virus\spyware scan (free AVG and malwarebytes are decent free programs if you don’t have protection already)

3) Run disc clean up. (start\programs\accessories\system tools\disc clean up, use the more options tab also to delete all but the most recent restore points.

4) Uninstall any unused programs in add and remove programs (especially toolbars), don’t uninstall anything you do not recognise without googling it first as you could end up uninstalling an important driver etc.

5) Run defrag as already mentioned above when all above is done (start\programs\accessories\system tools\disk defragmenter). This can take a long time to complete if your drive is badly fragmented, so run this when you do not need to use your PC.

More memory is always a good way to speed your computer up.

Some virus\firewall\spyware programs (Norton\Zone alarm) slow a computer down more than others also, suppose it depends on how much depth of protection you want.
I personally just use AVG free, Spybot, and windows firewall. End of the day common sense is the most important defence.
