external hard drive connected to router

Newbie
High, I would like to connect a external hard drive to my router, I would like to be able to watch my movies from a smart TV connected over wifi also. What kind type (or make) of external hard drive would be most suited for this.
Thanks in advance.

nas only have a lan input and plug for power. 1tb -6tb

Incorrect to say that "nas only have a lan input and plug for power"

Many routers have this feature.

thanks, is there any tutorials out there on how to set up hard drive connected to router to make my own home network?

Basically your router is your home network and in order to share within your network you need to set the share properties of whatever you want to share. For example, if you have a folder on your external drive or indeed any drive containing movies, TV shows or whatever and you wish them to be accessible on other devices across your internal network, simply right click the relevant folder(s) and go to properties & then the share TAB and set it to share. There is also a "Share With" option when you right click a folder in Win 7. It would be advisable to only share folders and not the root of any entire drive.

its not the router you linked to ,it was in reference to the nas hardrive connected to router gman for recording.

Code:

still only see lan and power plug.

Where exactly do you see that cactikid?

The picture you posted above has a USB port and a power socket ;)

Who's talking about recording? I understood the OP wants to watch movies stored on an external HDD on his smart TV.

Anyway, I'll leave it to you to get the OP up and running. Over and out :)

All I want is be able to watch my movies wirelessly on smart tv by connecting hard drive to my existing router via USB. Do I need a special type of hard drive?

I use the WD My Cloud, it connects directly to my router and is external, has its own power supply too so doesn't need USB power. There is software you can install on your phone/tablet etc which will allow you to access the file to watch etc without your PC been switched on. I got mine from Maplin for £50 for the 1TB. It also runs DLNA so will connect to a DVD/Blu ray player and TV boxes like apple TV, WDTV box etc.

Great kit, well supported and works like a charm. Easy to upload files via the software or network connection via your PC and you can access it via the web too if you set it up correctly.

It will also depend on TV and nas combo , my Samsung won't see the files on my dns323 , it's because there is no standard for Dnla servers each company seem to do there own thing
