[h=1]Gallery: World Trade Center to surpass Empire State Building as New York's tallest building[/h]
The rebuilt World Trade Center is set to reclaim the title of New York’s tallest building in the coming days.
It will surpass the Empire State Building, which has been the tallest in the city since the original Twin Towers collapsed on 11 September 2001.
The new building, which is also known as the Freedom Tower, was designed by architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill.
It will stand at a symbolic 1,776 feet, to mark the year of US independence.
Construction on the tower began in 2006 and is due to be completed next year.
The Twin Towers were designed by Minoru Yamasaki and opened in 1973, replacing the Empire State Building, which opened in 1931, as the city's tallest structures.
The Burj Khalifa in Dubai remains the world's tallest building at 828 metres (2,716.5 feet).
