NewsSFC Draw: Kerry could face Cork early
Oct 23, 2009

All-Ireland champions Kerry will have to beat Cork once again if they want to reclaim the Munster SFC crown after all four provincial draws for the 2009 Championship were made on Thursday evening.

The draws were conducted at Croke Park and broadcast live on RTÉ Two television, as well as being available live worldwide on RTÉ.ie.

Jack O'Connor's Sam Maguire holders begin next year's provincial campaign at the quarter-final stage against John Evans' Tipperary, a side who made very decent strides in 2009. The reward - if that is the right word - for the winners is a clash with Munster champions Cork in the provincial semi-final where Conor Counihan's charges will no doubt want to hit the ground running after performing so magnificently this year only to fall at the final hurdle. They defeated Kerry after a replay in last year's Munster semi-final and last month's loss at Croke Park only adds another motive to their desire to want to repeat that.

The other side of the Munster draw sees Clare and Waterford paired off in a quarter-final with last year's unfortunate Munster runners-up Limerick awaiting the victors of that contest in the last four.

In Leinster, Wexford will provide the first opposition for a Dublin side gunning for a sixth successive provincial crown. Those teams meet in a quarter-final and should Pat Gilroy's Dubs progress they could once again meet old foes Meath en route to the decider.

That pairing would need the right results to happen of course, with the Royals drawn to play in the Preliminary Round against Offaly. The winners of that then face Laois in the quarter-final and whoever emerges victorious there will face Wexford or Dublin.

On the other side of the draw Mick O'Dwyer's Wicklow take on Carlow with the winners meeting Westmeath, while the other quarter-final sees Kieran McGeeney's Kildare - Leinster runners-up in 2009 - lying in store for either Louth or Longford.

The Ulster Championship begins with a cracking-looking Preliminary Round encounter between Derry and Armagh and a further intriguing fixture awaits the winners who will mee Monaghan, while Cavan will begin their campaign against Fermanagh also on that side of the draw.

Ulster champions Tyrone - who lost their All-Ireland crown when ousted at the semi-final stage by Cork in 2009 - start with a repeat of last year's provincial decider when they face Antrim, with the winners in line to take on the victors of an attractive looking quarter-final pairing between Donegal and Down.

Finally, 2009 runners-up Galway and winners Mayo have been paired on the same side of the Connacht draw.

Galway and Roscommon were already aware that they faced Quarter-Final trips to New York and London respectively, the Tribesmen just lately having won the 2009 FBD League in the Big Apple. The third quarter-final sees a very exciting looking clash between Sligo and Mayo.

The winners of that then face either New York or Galway with Leitrim already in a semi-final where they await London or Roscommon.

Helmets Compulsory

From 1 January 2010 the wearing of helmets with faceguards will be compulsory for hurlers at all levels, the GAA announced today.

This will see senior players follow the regulations already in place at the minor and under 21 grades of hurling next year.

The GAA hope to significantly reduce the number of injuries by introducing the compulsory wearing of helmets with full faceguards, both in training and matches.

Hurlers of all ages, including those at nursery clubs when holding a hurley in their hand, must wear a helmet and faceguard at all times.

Match officials will be obliged to stop play if any player at any level appears on the field of play without the necessary standard of equipment.

Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael Crísotóir Ó Cuana fully endorsed the pending rule change.

He said: 'the introduction of this rule at senior level is a natural progression following as it does the rule change at minor and under-21 level in recent seasons.

'We have seen a reduction in the number of serious facial injuries at these grades thanks to the compulsory use of helmets in games and training and we would hope to see the same trend at senior level too.

'We accept that this change will provide challenges for older players not accustomed to wearing helmets and also to goalkeepers but we are confident that in time the benefits in terms of safety and player welfare will be seen to far outweigh any initial inconvenience presented by use of the helmets.'

always thought it should have been brought in years ago imo

have to agree in general, but i think that goalkeepers are a different case, they dont get involved in tackling, so the chance of getting ahurley to the head is very slim, i know that some will say but what about a sliothar to the head? well my answer to that is it is probably odds of about 2000-1 of anyone getting a ball to the headand there fore i think that if keepers dont want to wear one, then they shouldn't have to.

just my opinion

yeah wheelo would agree with gkeepers not having to wear them not because of the safety issue but because i wouldnt want to be the one telling them to put one on
because in my experience all hurling keepers are stone mad :)

couldn't agree more, you have to be a bit mad to want to stand in front of a sliothar travelling at 100 mph or so

The interim agreement between the GPA and the GAA has hit its first major stumbling block with opposition in Cork, writes RTÉ's Gaelic Games correspondent Jonathan Mullin.

Tuesday night's county board meeting on Leeside saw a robust debate on the historic announcement with the majority of those who spoke on the topic opposed to the deal.

Only one delegate welcomed the new link-up between the two associations.

Cork's delegates have been sent back to their clubs to find out their views before the county board mandate their Central Council delegate on how Cork will vote at next week's Central Council meeting.

'There was quite a lot of opposition to the deal with the GPA and clubs felt they needed to go back and consult with their members,' said board PRO Ger Lane.

Last weekend's announcement of official recognition for the GPA and €1.6m in funding needs majority backing from next spring's Annual Congress.

i can see more county boards objecting to this before annual congress meeting

Dublin boss Pat Gilroy has remained silent on the prospect of Ciaran Whelan reversing his decision to retire as he gets set to bring in as many as 12 new faces to the squad.

Gilroy is quoted on hoganstand.com saying: 'You'd have to talk to Ciaran about that. As far as I'd be concerned, if he became available of course we'd want to bring him back in. But it's his choice, and you have to respect him given the time that he's put into the jersey.'

Dublin will play in a regional tournament at the Innisfails GAA Grounds in Balgriffin this weekend, with Gilroy looking to blood some new players.

'I'd be disappointed if we didn't get 10 or 12 players in total from all of that mix and the regional tournament,' the Dublin boss said.

'There's a lot of guys playing in this tournament that we would have seen in the club championship and we believe would make the panel, so this would be a final endorsement for some of them.

'We definitely need a good fresh impetus into this panel.' 👍

would be glad to see ciaran back but i cant see him reversing his decision

Kevin Flynn scored one of the goals for Dublin

Sunday, 3 January 2010 17:10
Goals from David Curtin, Kevin Flynn and Maurice O'Brien saw Dublin's Hurlers defeat the Dublin Stars 3-16 to 1-11 in an exhibition match to mark the opening of new facilities at Fingallians in Swords on Sunday.
Curtin and Flynn netted in the first half to leave the score 2-08 to 0-07 at half-time.
O'Brien then added a third goal, with Peter Kelly on target for the Stars' team.

The match also saw former Dublin footballer Shane Ryan wear the Hurlers colours for the first time in a competitive match since 2001.
Ryan scored the first point of the second half.

Kerry goalkeeper Diarmuid Murphy had decided to retire from inter-county football, according to a newspaper report.

The three-time All Star was among several Kingdom players who were understood to be considering whether or not to play another year after last year's All-Ireland success.

The 34-year-old told the Irish Examiner that a continuing back complaint that required medication to control it had played a role in his decision.

Midfielder Darragh O'Se is also thought to be considering his future but with Kerry unlikely to be a major force in the Allianz National League - according to manager Jack O'Connor - there is scope for the An Gaeltacht star to be involved later in the season.

Kieran Donaghy will also be rested for the early part of the League.

Kerry have also lost Tommy Walsh and Tadhg Kenneally to Australian Rules.👍

David Henry named as Dublin captain

David Henry has been confirmed as the new Dublin senior football captain after Paul Griffin was ruled out for the season with torn cruciate ligament.

Henry's appointment comes as little surprise given that he was already vice captain and wore the captain's armband in the Dubs' previous two NFL games.

Meanwhile Dublin manager Pat Gilroy finally has some positive news on the fitness front with both Alan Brogan and Barry Cahill in line to be part of the squad to take on Galway in next Saturday's league encounter. 👍
