I hope I've put this in the correct place.
Google TV streamer 4K.....
Google TV Streamer (4K)

I guess this can be used with a VPN and foreign apps to get certain services just like ATV and Firestick?
Would this be a better option than the above or are they pretty much the same? I'm not the most knowledgeable on all of this and just learn as I'm going.
Cheers.

You should be able sideload apps like any other android based streaming sticks.
The only thing it doesn’t do is audio pass though on some audio codec’s from what I have read on Reddit.

This will provide you android TV and give you access to Google play apps. This is essentially a new version of the chromecast 4k(they've killed that line with this new streamer). Specs wise it is actually pretty close to the nvidia shield which is in my opinion pretty huge in the android space and will actually get updates unlike nvidia.

As for it being pretty much the same as above. To a certain degree... you'll find more apps directly on the app store with the streamer without as much need to side load using 3rd party apps like downloader/aptoide etc

Streamer looks like a nice product for general streaming users that have a lot of google products at home. My unsolicited advice:

Unless you're deep into Google's ecosystem I wouldn't pay twice as much for the Streamer 4k when you could buy Onn 4k pro and have wifi 6 and similar performance. The streamer could've been a great product with increased specs and wifi 6 but maybe another iteration of it will add it. The former has higher ethernet speeds but if that's your main concern you'd be better served getting a dedicated device like Shield anyway with higher performance specs.

I have a fire cube 3rd gen at the moment and have been considering an ATV4K, now this is in the mix
I use it for US apps like Peacock, Sling etc.
Didn't know if Google streamer or ATV would give a better/slicker experience and on which platform official app would be easier to access.
I'm most probably overthinking it and should stick with the Fire cube.
👍

I might have access to a few of the Onn 4K Pro boxes here in the UK (US retail price is $50). They do come with a USA plug.

£60 delivered via T48 RM. If there's any interest - I can put a post up in the For Sale section(?).

I don’t think you need to buy another device imo.
The apps will just work the same.
It might open the apps slightly quicker but it might not.
The only difference will be you will running the official Google tvOS instead of Fire tvOS which is based on AOSP.
Apps that are Geo blocked will still not be available in the UK Google TV play store.
You may have set the playstore to the specific countries for certain apps and use a vpn or sideload the apk.

I use the Shield, I love it, however I get Sky Sports via now TV and it doesn't offer the UHD support, whether this will change I don't know but if the specs are similar to the shield, for my usage (IPTV, Streamio, Peacock & Now TV) this could fit the bill

Now TV does offer Sky UHD channels with ultra boost.
Not sure if they are output in HLG (HDR) format or just HDR format.
The shield doesn’t support HLG format and would just be 4k SDR if the output is HLG.

Onn 4K Pro and Google streamer seem to be similarly speced. Homatics r 4k plus one tier higher.
Have you tried stuff like iplayer HLG 4k or other uk based apps on the onn 4k pro? @Prim@l

Not tried one out yet but I suspect in the coming days someone will be able to confirm :)

It doesn’t support full audio pass through.
It does support HLG but you need to set DolbyVision to low latency in settings.
Not sure if you will be able to use UK catch up apps on a device that is manufactured for the US market.

which device are you referring to, the ONN? I think hassle free HLG is pretty important with IPTV having 4k HLG streams too. Audio passthrough is also a bummer but Ok for a low end bedroom TV or something i guess. Does Google Streamer do all that?

Referring to the ONN device.
The Google streamer supports HLG but not full audio pass through.

Googletv 4k struggles some when loading channels etc. I have 2 and no longer us them, they force google movies and playstore, voice remote feature their apps have priority not yours. There apps are constantly running and using up all your storage. way worse then what Amazon did to the firesticks. I now only purchase devices that allow Google playstore to be disabled. Why pay to be spied on. lol

That sounds like a deal breaker lol.
Hopefully I never have to use a device running Google TV.
But then again great if you want access to official streaming apps.
What device are you currently using?

I use 3 Nvidia shield pro at home, Q Dongle as a traveller on the road. No apps appearing without my permission.
