Help needed to work out how much material needed please

Hi everybody,


I'm really sorry but I was wondering if you guys could help me find out how many rolls of foam/rubber matting I need to put under my artificial grass.


My gardens dimensions are:


Length 515cm
Width 512cm




Each rolls dimensions are:-


3 meters length
1.2 meters wide


Please could you show me the formula you used the work your answer out please.

First thing you should do is bring all your measurements into the same unit of measure.

So, let’s take centimeters (cm) as the unit of measure we will work from?

Your garden measurements are already in centimeters so we will change the dimensions of the foam rolls from meters to centimeters.

To do this you multiply each of the foam rolls measurements by 100.

Your roll now becomes 300cm long

Your roll now becomes 120cm wide



Your gardens dimensions are:


Length 515cm
Width 512cm




Each rolls dimensions are:


Length 300cm
Width 120cm

You then need to divide the length of your roll into the length of your garden

300 into 515 goes 1.71 times, which means you will need to get 2 rolls to cover the length of your garden and will have a little spare but that is down to the roll size.

Now you need to divide the width of your roll into the width of your garden

120 into 512 goes 4.26 times, which means you will need 4.26 rolls to cover the width of your garden. You can't buy 4.26 rolls so we will need to round it up to 5

So now you know you need 2 rolls to cover the length of your garden one time?

You also know you need 4.26 rolls to cover the total width of your garden?

So now you multiply the 2 by 4.26 which gives you 9.2 rolls but because we needed to round the 4.26 up to 5 it now becomes 2 multiplied by 5

Considering this is not an exact science you would be good to go with 10 rolls but would have some off cuts to throw away. Better to have enough than to be short ;)

I had to do something similar recently...

Garden dimensions are:
Length 515cm
Width 512cm
In square metres (5.15*5.12 = 26.368sq metres)

Each rolls dimensions are:-
3 meters length
1.2 meters wide
In square metres (3*1.2 = 3.6sq metres)

So 26.368/3.6 = 7.324 - You need just over 7, so 8 would do.
