Cable HELP set up zgemma star H1 box from for newbie

Tallsaj

Newbie
hi can any one help me from scratch to set up my zgemma star H1 box please, I had some instructions from the person who I bought the gift off but still no joy and the guy is too busy to help( I am getting some error messages on the TV screen I can send those if any help.

I've just gone through the trauma of setting one of these up for cable only. I was going to start a thread but thought I'd tack my procedure onto this as it seems a logical place to hang it.

I'm not an expert. This is the minimum I did to get the box working for me so don't shout if it doesn't work for you...

First.............................
Mega thanks to sucmnsee
Thanks also to RustyMG, Bees, Tich and anyone else who contributes.

1. Getting the image onto a USB to reflash the box

RustyMG started a thread "idiots guide to installing sucmnsee's image with EVERY step explained in detail"
Unfortunately this is aimed at satellite - which confused this idiot!

HOWEVER thanks to RustyMG for setup info!

Follow RustyMG's steps "Setting up the usb stick" and "Flashing the zgemma"

NOTE: When you unpack the image it may create nested sub-directories e.g. "Zgemma star 2s Vix 3.2.005 sucmnsee Backup 19.09.2015\Zgemma star 2s Vix 3.2.005 sucmnsee Backup 19.09.2015\zgemma\sh1)
You are only interested in putting "zgemma\sh1" onto a USB, e.g. E:\zgemma\sh1

With the box turned off, put the USB into the USB at the REAR of the box and turn it on - 'FLSH' should be shown while reflashing. If it doesn't work
try reformatting etc or a different USB!

2. Connections

If you are connecting to cable only connect to RF in. This is an old-style aerial connector so you need a UHF-to-cable lead or an adapter. (I think this will do but don't hit me if I'm wrong "http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/rf-coaxial-adapters/5462576/")
Leave Tuner A unconnected
Use a wired internet cable preferably

3. Get a USB stick or HDD for program guide and recordings and timeshift to rewind TV etc.

I tried formatting a USB stick in Windows as NTFS and also ExtFs but it complained when I tried to setup timeshift.
In the end I used a free utility "MiniTool Partition Wizard Free Edition" and formatted the USB stick as ETX4.
The program is a bit odd in that when you say format the USB, it sets the job as pending. To start formatting you need to select apply and it recommends you reboot - you don't need to do that.
DON'T FORMAT YOUR HARD DISK BY MISTAKE!!!!

Put this USB in the back of the box (powered off) and power up. It should detect this automatically.

Then refer to thread "New Vix Apollo 165 zgemmastar 2s (H1) sucmnsee backup 10/06/15" by sucmnsee to setup the USB.

I've COPIED their text below. Incidentally I didn't see any problem with the 1-minute rule.

sucmnsee:
Box on. Within 1 minute do:
Menu
Setup
System
Storage devices
Initialisation
Select ur drive
Red to initialise
Exit all

Menu
Setup
Vix
Swapfile manager
Blue to create 256mb. Wait
Yellow to autostart
Green to start
Red to close.
Hold power button on remote for 3 secs and select Restart (never GUI)

4. Your line
RustyMG's thread suggested entering your line details with the remote. You can try this method but I found it a bit frustrating.
Tich suggested the following method. See also Bees thread "Guide How to set up an E2 combo box with vix image"

A. Get you box IP number:
menu->Information->Network, write down IP address, e.g. 192.168.0.16

B. On a PC, download (free) filezilla client and run...
Put the IP address in the Host box as (e.g.) "root@192.168.0.16" (without the quotes) and click QuickConnect

In the left box (Local Site) is the PC. In the Right Box is the ZGemma.
In the Right Box navigate to usr\keys
YOU MAY WANT TO: Copy your original usr\keys\mg_cfg & newcamd.list to the PC (just in case). This is a simple drag and drop.
Edit the newcamd.list in the right box with your line and save it. Close the connection.
Note I only have a single "CWS = ..." line in my file.

C.
YOU MAY WANT TO: confirm your box has the correct line..
Go back to the box and check the line is correct: Menu->TSpanel->Files explorer, navigate to newcamd.list.
Press and hold to view it. Is it right?? Exit to quit.

Once you've changed the line, go to menu->Setup->Softcam/CI->Softcam Manager
Select mgcamd1.38 and yellow to restart

NOTE IF YOU TURN OFF THE BOX: You will need to restart the mgcamd1.38 as above.

5. Select your area
This is where I got lost with RustyMG's thread because it talks about satellite..

I just did the following...
Go to Menu->Setup->Service searching->Autobouquets maker->Providers
Set FreeSat, Kabel, Sky ROI, Sky UK to no
Set Virgin UK to yes
Set the area code by going through the pre-loaded list and save. I just picked the closest one.

This prompted for a scan which found all the channels.

I didn't find any reason to change the tuner configuration, or anything complicated. Leave the tuner A as it is even though you're not using it.

I didn't bother changing the EPG setting either. Time will tell..

6.
You can change the screen from 720 to 1080 in Menu->Setup->System->A/V settings
