Skys router only has 2 ethernet ports, shocking if you ask me. Their new one has 4, but they are only offering their new hub if you take out a new 18 month contract with their broadband boost add-on @ £5pm . The broadband boost is fairly useless, here is how to get the new router and a 5 quid discount on your broadband (you will need a 18m contract). Helps if you have the end of your current contract in sight
1 ask about getting the new router. Emphasise that you need more ethernet ports. They will them say you can get one for no charge, but you have to take out broadband boost.
2 here you need to hold your nerve. Say that broadband boost will cost 90 quid over the 18months and that you may as well switch to another provider that offers a router with more ports, emphasise that means every other provider, as 2 ports is unique to sky. Say you will let your contract lapse and see what retentions can offer as you can't afford to pay more.
3 they will now speak to a supervisor. They cannot offer you broadband boost for free, but if you state that cost is as huge issue they will offer to discount your broadband and calls by £5 pm so the cost is neutral.
4 take this offer.
5 make a cup of tea and wait for the email to say your router is on the way and then get ready to phone back. One feature of broadband boost is they test your line at some point between 12 and 5am. If they detect a fault they send an engineer. But this drops your internet for 2-3 mins. Now I play semi professionally online poker, so this is a no no for me. But you can say you are editing videos online, trading stocks, what ever. But that feature is going to cost you money and you want it disabling. They person on the phone will not know how to do this, as you cannot disable just this feature. So say you want to cancel as it will materially affect your wealth.
You will now go to cancellations. They will remove broadband boost taking 5 quid of your bill.
You now have the new router on way and your bill will be 5quid a month cheaper than it was before.
But you will be in a 18 month contract.
For me it was worth it, the lack of ports was killing me haha
