How to stop HDD from running continouly

Hello,

Thanks to everyone for helping me setup my cloud ibox 2 plus...!!

I have initialised a 40GB portable usb Hdd to the box and it works in recording programs.

But I have noticed that even if I am not recording anything or in timeshift...the HDD keeps spinning

I have kept had disk standby at 10 mins in system/storage devices/hard disk setup but even when the box is in standby....the light on the HDD stays on and i can feel the disk spinning.

I wonder if my hdd will pack up soon if it keeps running all the time...can you pls suggest how to stop it

i am not sure there is anything you can do. most people have a usb stick for the epg etc and then only use the hardrive for recording, otherwise the hardrive will spin evreytime you change channel.

I am ready to stick a usb stick (4gb) in the box...but how do i transfer the concerned files to the stick so the box does not use the HDD all the time.??
 
Hdd will run for years without problems. Most pc's in business are on all day and do not need a new harddrive for over 5 years, so do't think it be to much of a deal if it running all the time while the box is on.
 
And the hdd in a skyhd box basically runs all the time too. Also a usb stick will only last as long in this position.

Also u generally get the 'ticking' sound when he disk is warping and about to pack in. If you know it when u hear it its like a reminder to swap out the drive lol

I have at least 1 hard drive (at work) in a server (runs basically 24x7) that is at least 12 years old. Still working fine (there is a backup,anyway).
 
now the question running it off just the usb which will go first,i like my hard drives powered with external plug,i had a 500gb always spin and light always on bloody bedroom with multi coloured lights ,now replaced it with a 2tb external toshiba and they dont have a light and it shuts down quiet lol.
 
I use the samsung 500gb drives out of slyboxes in Cit enclosures powered. Always on and light hidden. Nice and quiet on stand.
