Decided to switch it on and viewing and it smoked like hell , removed the cover to check more and sparks at the centre tube under the black box and sparks and lights and smoke coming from it.

Watching that video of replacing the thermostat it is loose and moves around and wonder if mine has arc welded itself as no movement.

Yes they should be loose they just slip into a pocket in immersion heater and are attatched by a few wires.

personally I would just buy new immersion heater and replace the lot.

Honestly any decent plumber should have no problems removing old imersion heater, and believe me your cylinder aint that old , I just don't like people getting ripped off for what should be a simple job i.e, replacing immerson heater  hope everything goes ok .

What can happen on older systems is when for example they shut the feed or usually gate valve that supplies the water to cylinder older ones they can shut them or attempt to shut them but when trying to open them again spindle can sheer so the valve is left in closed position and will need stripped out.

So even on older systems some times it is better to use what we call bungs to plug outlet and vent from feed tank to stop water supply so as not to try and shut off old gate valves.

EDIT: and I will say it again this is what forums are for sharing of information even on different subjects

These are normally fitted next to cylinder as standard on feed pipe which at one time would be 28mm some now will be 22mm, but some times gatevave could also be fitted to oultlet of the cold feed tank in loft but some times they may be secondary as not great access if needed for house holder in emergency.

Yes there is a big pipe with twist tap on it on left and another on 1/2 pipe on the right.
Pity tags were not put on them to know what for..
I cant get at shut off feed in under kitchen press anymore.
