Jockey Lawlor suffers head injuries

Francis Lawlor was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast with serious head injuries following a fall at Down Royal this evening.

The 19-year-old claimer from Ballitore in Kildare suffered a heavy fall when Hammer It Home crashed out at the third last in the Data Select Handicap Hurdle.

'He has suffered head injuries and is still unconscious. Dr Welby Henry, who saw him, was very worried about him,' reported Turf Club Medical Officer Dr John Kennedy.

The Turf Club's Chief Medical Officer Adrian McGoldrick said: 'He has a serious head injury and is currently under investigation in the Royal Victoria Hospital.'

McGoldrick later added: 'He's critically ill and is incubated and ventilated at present. He is having a brain scan and we are waiting for the report to see if he needs surgery.'

Francis Lawlor suffered a heavy fall at Down Royal (above)




Kildare jockey Francis Lawlor is out of a coma and breathing independently at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast after a heavy fall at Down Royal on Friday evening.


The 19-year-old claimer from Ballitore suffered a heavy tumble when Hammer It Home crashed out at the third-last in the Data Select Handicap Hurdle.


There were grave concerns for the rider when he was taken to hospital unconscious but he appears to be on the way to making an amazing recovery.


The Irish Turf Club's press officer Cliff Noone said: 'They took the tube out at lunchtime and he is now breathing spontaneously.


'He has not broken his jaw but has facial injuries and bruising to his liver. He is still pretty groggy and will remain under observation in hospital for three to four days.'
