Humberside Fire and Rescue Service was called to the incident in a distillation unit at the Lindsey Oil Refinery at 11.58am.

Police said two people had been treated for minor injuries.

People living in the area reported hearing an explosion and black smoke could be seen as far away as Hull. For a time, residents were advised to keep windows and doors closed and to stay indoors.

The refinery is run by oil company Total, who confirmed that a small explosion happened shortly after the fire broke out.

Police said later that the blaze had been contained and was under control.

A spokeswoman said: "The incident has been contained and the fire service are dealing with it.

"It's OK now for people to go about their daily business."

The spokeswoman said police were working with the fire service to determine the cause of the fire.

The refinery found itself in the headlines last year when hundreds of contractors walked out in a row about employing foreign workers.

The dispute escalated into a national political storm.

The refinery is the third largest in the UK with a processing capacity of more than 200,000 barrels per day. It started production in 1968.
