Answer from AI:

For Spain, the most effective approach depends on your environment, but
DEET-based sprays are generally the gold standard for personal protection, while butane-powered repellers like Thermacell are best for outdoor seating areas.

Top Mosquito Repellents
For high-risk areas or people who are frequently bitten, experts recommend formulas containing DEET, Picaridin (Icaridin), or PMD.
  • Jungle Formula Maximum Strength (50% DEET)
: Provides up to 9 hours of protection and is a top-rated choice for both tropical and European climates.
  • Lifesystems Expedition MAX
: Uses DermaLOC technology to keep the repellent on the skin surface longer, offering up to 8 hours of protection with less absorption.
  • Incognito Anti-Mosquito Spray
: A 100% natural, DEET-free alternative using PMD (Citrepel 75). It is safe for children from 6 months and effective for up to 7 hours.
  • Mercadona Citronella Spray
: A popular, low-cost local option in Spain (often around €2) that many residents swear by for shorter periods of protection.

Best Outdoor Repellers & Zappers
Electric zappers are common, but heat-activated repellers are often more effective at creating a bite-free "zone" on patios or balconies.
  • Thermacell MR300
    /
    Halo Mini

: These portable devices use a butane cartridge to heat a repellent mat, creating a 20m² scent-free protection zone. They are highly effective for outdoor dining and terraces in Spain.
  • Wolf Mozzi-Zappa
: A 2-in-1 rechargeable camping lantern and zapper. It uses UV light to lure insects into an 800V grid and is ideal for balconies or tents.
  • Solar Bug Zappers: Options like the
    Phatroyyee Solar Zapper
use a 4500V grid and can be staked into garden ground, charging via sunlight during the day.

Indoor Solutions
  • Plug-in Vaporisers: Brands like Jungle Formula or local Spanish brands (e.g., Bloom) use odourless insecticide vapour to clear a room. One refill typically lasts for 45 nights if used 8–10 hours daily.
  • Electric Rackets: The
    Rechargeable Insect Zapper Racket
is a manual but satisfying way to clear individual mosquitoes that make it inside.

Local Tip for Spain
Mosquitoes in Spain, especially the
Tiger Mosquito
, are most active at dawn and dusk. If you're shopping locally, look for the brand Relec at any farmacia (chemist); it is widely considered one of the most powerful repellents available in the country.

They hate the smell of natural oil like lavender, tea tree and peppermint. Also the smell of burning ground coffee.
Fans are helpful as they are shit at flying in breezy conditions.

Anything with citronella is good for the house, There are room and personal sprays available.
Lidl do similar

I use Xpel insect repellent wipes when I'm fishing in France.
Ive tried every chemical spray and lotion and potion over the decades, but only these do what they say on the packaging.
Surprisingly they are the cheapest of the cheap, and I've not been bitten in the past 4-5 years since I started using them, dont forget, I'm by a lake in the forest for seven days and nights in hot weather, they work.

One wipe will cover both arms, neck, ears and face, then a second wipe will do both legs if you're wearing shorts.

Google: Xpel insect repellent wipes

Most of the cheapo shops in UK stock them, they have a lemony smell but it's not overbearing.
