MPs back assisted dying bill in historic Commons vote

In a historic vote, MPs have approved a bill which would pave the way for huge social change by giving terminally ill adults in England and Wales the right to end their own lives.

The Terminally Ill Adults Bill, which was backed by 314 votes to 291, will now go to the House of Lords for further scrutiny.

The vote came after an emotionally charged debate which saw MPs recount personal stories of seeing friends and relatives die.

It is likely, although not guaranteed, that the House of Lords will approve the bill later this year.

If that happens, ministers would have a maximum of four years to implement the measures, meaning it could be 2029 before assisted dying becomes available.

What's your thoughts...

It needs to be allowed but should such an important decision be left to the government, especially this one with a cabinet full of morons and at least 50% of the MPs in the commons who act like they are still in a school's sixth form, then going to the Lords where half of them will be asleep and many more may not have been taking their meds properly, plus there will be bishops who will probably vote along what their religious beliefs say, and not what is logical and sensible?

This should really have been held as a two part referendum for the voters to decide, part one to decide if we should allow assisted deaths, and if that passed a second one to decide if it should be as complicated and drawn out as the bill that they have voted on, with several more amendments likely to make it worse, or a simpler one that only needs the person to request to end their suffering, even if they are not terminal within 6 months but are never going to get any better, and then a GP from their practice who will be aware of their condition and medical history, plus a second independent GP should be able to authorise it.

People who are against it in all cases should be reminded that it will not be compulsory to request help to end their suffering, so if they wish to continue living in excruciating pain for however long it takes for them to die, then they can still live like that, but I and most people I know would prefer to choose when to die if they were suffering.

I don’t see the problem , if I’m dying and most likely in the last 12 months of my life and suffering I want the right to be put out of my misery . The last thing I want is to be lay in a bed asleep for 23 and a half hours a day having to shit in a nappy and lay in it until some low paid foreigner gets the time to come and clean me with my family having to keep coming to sit by my side without me being aware of it until I take my last breath. A most horrendous way of dying , people don’t let their pets suffer that way so why make humans , give them the choice.I don’t see need to see all the professionals they are talking about , by the time I get all the appointments through I’ll have passed anyhow.

Not a fan of current legislation full of possible holes. I suspect it will get watered down aswell. I think it has to go through another reading where BMA will object

@10 years ago Canada passed this same bill but it has fallen into a free for all to decide who lives or dies

Terminal illness & lifelong pain I understand completely but I think it will be like Pandora's Box

Poor, lonely and homeless opting for assisted death in Canada | CARE

Just google any of these to see the "planned slippery slope" they're going to head for "quickly" IMO

euthanasia for depression in canada
canada euthanasia mental health
canada approves euthanasia for mental illness
what euthanasia has done to canada
euthanasia in canada law
legal euthanasia in canada

Yes but the current legislation dosent even state the drug they will use. The BMA want nothing to do with it. Because its going against a Doctors oath

How you going to get all the people together

Judge
Psychiatrist not even enough for mentally ill.
Forget other

Its pretty difficult to predict somebody only has 6 months left with certainty

There are plenty of other flaws

The trouble is i think it was rushed like alot of the legislation with the current government

They have U-turned on loads of there policies

The bottom line is no Doctor will sign up to this. Ask yourself would you be the one to say yes or no

Plus I dont believe any Goverment should ask someone to play God either. Because they will be first to criticise if something goes wrong. Some poor person will end up on a murder charge

If someone’s poor lonely or homeless why not let them , who are we to say no you can’t - you can suffer for the rest of life ?
If the government are not prepared to assist , then people should be allowed to do as they please . There’s a stigma attached to suicide whereas assisted dying would be more dignified. There needs to be an official way to end your own life , a terminal illness is definitely a good enough reason .

so kill somebody because they are poor. Why not help them.

kill someone who is homeless why not put them up in a hotel. We do it for people who cross the channel.

kill someone for being lonely why not open up community hubs where lonely people can meet and chat

For stuff like terminal cancer we pretty much have assisted dying that is what happens in a hospice.

Trouble is with self administering someone would need to help.

Therefore ending life earlier than needed when they could spend it with loved ones is not acceptable

I am not killing anyone , I believe people should have the freedom to choose.
Have you seen anyone die in a hospice , it is slow and lingering , they starve and dehydrate in the final days because they will choke if they swallow. I don’t want my loved ones having to visit me each day when I will be too drugged up to open my eyes. I want the choice to go before I get to that stage.
