I wouldn't read too much into how many runners etc, anyone can win this, Wallace has a good chance.

Yes he didn't win.
Neither did 7 of the other 9 who entered.
It's like the grand national, there's only one winner every year but forty seven runners enter every year, you'd have thought the other forty six wouldn't bother entering if there's only ever one winner

Sunak won't be PM, the 160K party members vote for leader and they're unlikely to have someone who's going to lose a general election in two years.
Truss will be pm by September
