Openbox v8s - iPhone as hotspot for internet connection

Hi all,

Thought I would post my experiences connecting the Openbox V8s to my iPhone to serve the box with an internet connection. I'mtrying to save abit of money on paying for broadband and the unnecessary line rental (mobile contract has unlimited calls), so I thought why not :)

I used the official Skybox wifi dongle and paired this to my iPhone. Connected without issue and very straightforward . I also installed an app as I was conscious of data usage. I expected it to be low (thanks to my research on these forums) and after watching 8hours of tv on the weekend i was happy to see it equated to less than 1MB! - which i believe are the data packets going back and forth serving as a sort of encryption / decryption handshake (tell me if I'm wrong here)

The only downside is that having a hotspot does impact the battery usage on the iphone but in my opinion it's better than paying for expesnive broadband.

Is anyone else using a similar setup?

Cheers

Might give this a try on an android box with wifi just to seee

Just a newbie on the forums so can't post links. But a quick search in fleabay shows you the right one (skybox Branding all over the shop)

ps yes it had an antenna as heard those are better. To be fair the box stays connected to my iPhone when I'm as far as 20metres away so good range.

I get around 12mb down and similar up (on 4g with O2) but I'm confident this would even work with 3G. I did consider jumping ship to 3 but they limit personal hotspot usage to 4gb (although you'll never reach that connecting to just the openbox)

With O2 4g. That gives me 12mb down and the same up.
I bought the wifi adapter from fleabay (plastered with skybox logo and about £7) opted for the one with antenna as that reviewed better. Range is awesome. Skybox stays connected all around the house.

Hi Guys,
I also use a Sky SC01 wifi adapter connected by ethernet cable to Openbox V5s & Samsung S4 phone hotspot on 3 network.

I also connect to a MXQ android TV box running Kodi helix to stream episodes of US shows that my wife is too impatient to wait to come on UK.

I have a skybox v8s got a wifi dongle and can connect to the box got about 7mb speed in the caravan but can't get it too unscramble? Tried couple different lines with no luck

Sorry maybe a thick question but what is the difference between a wifi adapter and a adapter that includes a dongle?

I just bought a wifi adapter for 4.99 , what is the purpose of the USB dongle?

I am running an Openbox V8s in my caravan connected with a wirless adaptoer to a EE MIFI device that is running on 3G+ as there must be no 4G coverage. This works fine for me with the occasional slight freeze for a second or so every now and again. If your lines are good it may be the dongle causing the issue. Can you connect the box to your phone as a hotspot just to test?
