Openbox v8s will it work with iPhone hotspot

Hey guys,

I am asking this on behalf of my brother. He is a student and has unlimited 3 mobile data package on his iPhone he is moving into a flat with the sly sat cables. There is no internet and phone connection setup in the flat. He basically wants to take his openbox to the flat and plug it in and connect it via a wifi adapter for the openbox. Would he be able to do this if he connects the openbox to his iPhone via the hotspot method?

the reasons behind this is he doesn't want to sign up and commit to internet when he might only be in the place a few months, he has an openbox at home he is going to take. He just wanted me to make sure it would be possible for the *handshake* to happen using 4G internet.

Thanks in advance for your replies. Any advice is welcome.

I cannot offer any advice as an expert, but your problem is familiar. I am sure a mate tried this a few months back, and I believe it is possible to do, but it can be tricky to keep the phone in an "awake" mode and keep sending the packet data to the box. He kept getting freezing in the picture, even though 4g signal was strong in the area he was in.

He asked the same question on the forum, and I am sure the more Tech-minded members said to him that a phone can go into "sleep" mode when you're not interacting with the screen (I believe it saves battery). When this happens, your connection to the box would be intermittent, meaning you get alot of freezing and glitching.

Now, I also do recall him being advised to stream a radio station or similar to keep the phone in "awake" mode and then the problem may not be as bad. Another pearl of wisdom I recall is that as you are relying on mobile phone signal, there are things that can interfere with said signal as opposed to a fixed line with Ethernet or Home Plugs.

Like I said, I am no expert, and can only draw on memory from the same scenario my mate faced, but maybe one of the more tech-skilled can confirm this or indeed correct me if I've got the wrong end of the stick.

Is there not also a 1Gb limit to tethering with 3, regardless of an unlimited data package?

I haven't come across such a limit (use 3 as my mobile provider with unlimited data & tethering allowed) but in either case, the packets of data are not particularly large, and so 1Gb would be enough anyway I would imagine.

Thanks everyone for your replies I think he will try both ways with a dongle and his iPhone hotspot see if there both stable.

thanks

with the v8s it can take a 3g dongle but be careful only a few work this one work fine as i have it working down my caravan

you must make sure you buy an open to all networks
then you need a three or ee data sim 1 gig of data is more than enough for the box
then setup and all done

hi, can you list the ones that didn't work for you? a bit like the list of usb's that have been tested and work?

I use mine with my galaxy s4s hotspot with 3's ulimited data and tethering plan but i found it works best with a powered usb hub plugged into the back of the open box and the wifi dongle plugged into the hub. Also have a usb memory card plugged into the hub for recording and epg storage Works perfect
