So I came across this and unless I missed it I haven’t seen it discussed here so it got me thinking
Sky gets access to 'dodgy box' users after landmark court case gives them names and bank details

Looks like in that case Sky were able to get hold of people’s details (including payment info) and potentially going after users, not just sellers…

I know there’s been threads on payment methods before, but with stuff like this happening, do people think it’s worth revisiting?

Mainly thinking around privacy / traceability and how comfortable people are with different payment options.

It’s had me researching more about crypto seems most crypto is traceable…
What’s your go to?
Paypal
Crypto
Cash
I’m Just Curious what others think?

Well people won't learn and pay with crypto. It depends how crypto is used can be private
Yeah, everyone wants to use PayPal but that is growing more concerning how long until paysafe starts giving up people as well. I have seen people mentioning Monero buying it from P2P exchange but haven’t tried it.

Even if sly could prove that the PayPal payment you sent was for service they would also have to prove that you actually watched their copyrighted material on that service.
Which probably has many channels from different parts of the world.
I have only heard of suppliers of services being prosecuted not the actual end user.
I think it’s easier to gather evidence on a supplier than what the end user actually viewed on the service.

I agree I doubt end users would be prosecuted

I get what you guys are saying about suppliers being the easier target, but It feels like things are changing recently.

Again on crypto, it's surprising how everyone thinks it's anonymous. Once it’s linked to you at any point( Exchange KYC), the trail’s pretty visible.

Feels like it comes down to whether it’s worth the effort for them to go after individuals rather than if they can.

Surely there must be some better way going forward?

This is the key. Crypto can be anonymous but it depends how you acquire the crypto. There are websites that let you buy crypto with a prepaid visa (which you could have acquired for cash). Then, if you send this to a cold wallet, that crypto is effectively anonymous. But if you go through a KYC exchange, it is completely traceable back to you.

Crypto is totally anonymous if using hard wallets simply because they ate not registered to anybody
The fact that is a hard (hardware) wallet is not the relevant factor. It just needs to be a real wallet, rather than an exchange.

Software wallets such as Exodus, Cake Wallet, etc. are just as anonymous as hardware wallets. You are just an address, no KYC.

The reason hardware wallets are better than software wallets is due to greater security, not greater anonymity.

The problem is that the crypto itself is fully traceable. So if you buy crypto on an exchange, and send it to your software or hardware wallet, then said wallet is now traceable to you. You have to acquire the crypto anonymously.

You have to acquire the crypto anonymously.
So, some kind of disguise is required..🤔

We really got to find a solution to that KYC though 😭
Ya the comment that you replied to was not really accurate. Cold wallets (regardless of whether they’re “hard” or “soft”) are anonymous, but it doesn’t matter if you already went through KYC with an Exchange to acquire the crypto.

There are methods to get crypto anonymously, though. There are websites that allow you to buy crypto with credit card, and I think some may work with prepaid credit cards.

Problem is some of the p2p platforms are also starting to require kyc and Card payments leave trail anyway.
Is there away to avoid kyc on selling cypto?

Bitcoin at ATM wouldn't work don't think need to register. With bank
A lot of bitcoin ATMs will let you sell bitcoin for cash. This wouldn’t involve the bank, and is one way to cash out bitcoin without involving the bank.

There are also websites that let you buy gift cards for bitcoin.
