Potential Purchase Queries.

My sky contract runs out in a few weeks and looking at the Star H2S as a replacement and have a few queries needing confirmation.

Buying the box from here means it comes with open atv will this provide all the free ota channels or is another build like whooshbuild a better option.

I am planning on using a USB powered hard drive for recordings and have seen mention on this forum that it may cause issues with the box. Anyone any experience of issues.

Again I have seen mentioned that you can't set to record varies programs as it only records the first one set is this correct.

Once all set up with whatever build to get the other channels is it just a case of getting a gift / line and setting up the relevant file.

Hi pal bought one of these a couple of months back and love it. I was using the basic open box for a couple of years and wish I had of switched to a zgemma back then. Firstly I recommend using a mains powered hard drive I have a 500gb mains powered USB hard drive and have absolute no problems. I did use a USB powered hard drive and I had issues main issue being the blue circle appearing on screen and not being able to change channel until it disappeared I think it has something to do with power issues running of USB from box. Recording is great you can record a channel while watching a different channel and can record multiple programmes on different channels so long as it does not clash with time. Hope this helps in some way....good luck.

1. WooshBuild is OpenATV with plugins and configuration all done for you and has a simple setup. It takes the hard work out of it. It also makes your box look like Sly as you will have also read.

2. USB Powered HDD is fine - hundreds of people using them without any issue. They are USB powered to be powered by a USB port. Myth and old old drives maybe, I have never seen or heard of a USB going pop as a result

3. No, recording is like Sly, you set it up to record what and when you want, it just doesn't have the easy of Sly, but record one, watch another, record 2 watch IPTV or a recording and so on

4. Yes it is. WooshBuild makes that easy too. If you get a test line before you start flashing Wooshbuild, it will sort that out for you too.

You can also start from scratch and use: http://www.techkings.org/general-satellite-discussion/114651-openatv-set-up-guide.html#post647342

Good luck :-)

Thanks for the replies which have confirmed that the Zgemma is an ideal replacement.

I have found a local provider who can supply the gift as either a c line or n line and from what I have read I believe it's better as an n line assuming it's a good n line.

Hi pal, yes nline depending on who's line you use some real good ones on this forum, easily installed on zgemma with whoosh build initial set up or through USB cam importer again through whoosh build very easy, good luck....

Thanks again for the info. The one I found wasn't from this site but I would prefer to use one from here assuming I can find one in a couple of weeks when I get the box ordered.

Another question if I may.

I have seen mentioned being able to watch the channels from the Zgemma on an amazon fire tv / stick in another room using kodi.

I have an Apple TV 4 and I'm hoping that I can do similar by running kodi on the atv. Anyone have this system setup and does it run without issue.

I'm guessing once you have Kodi running on a JB'd ATV, you could use the instructions on here, just not on a Firestick.
