Recover Dead Skybox Flash Using Serial RS232 Null modem Cable

From what I have read on here it may be the power supply and AJs list(not knocking it coz don't know it as I use CWAITE, old Satv5, list). The solder can easily break away inside the box in the power supply socket, plus the newer boxes f5s/v5s/v8s sometimes have a problem with the AJ list. Don't know why it does but it does sometimes. Open your box and check the power supply socket, it may be loose. If so then post on here about loose power socket/AJ list/reboot and someone with more knowledge than me might be able to help.
 
thanks for your help soberish. im new to this but it seems like these boxes are great when they work but a pain when not. ive given up and bought a new 1, so hope I don't get the same issues with the new box

RS232 SERIAL CABLE vs. RS232 NULL CABLE

Guys. I've spend two days shouting and pulling my hair due to problem i had with upgrading my OPENBOX V8S FIRMWARE. My Openbox was stuck on loop boot due to A.J Channel List update i done.
I researched the problem and I bought the RS232 cable in local PC shop. Thank god i have two PCs and the older model had RS232 port , so all i needed is a cable , latest firmware and EromUpgrade tool.
I tried different firmwares, i've tried different EromUpdate Tools , i made sure the COM Port was the right one, i even tried my other F3 Skybox which works fine just to see if it starts downloading. Nothing !!!
I kept getting nothing,,,,it wouldn't get any futher than " SYNCHRONIZING STBS "
I've spend hrs researching and trying everything with no luck :arrgh:. I even called my friends to see if their PCs had the RS232 port to try on their PCs.
I've read this thread and 100s others 100 times and then i came accross video ( can't share link here) just type it in search engine Null Modems & Serial Cable - Youtube

I was sure i had the right cable, but I DIDN'T !!!!!!!!!!!!! They are exacly the same apart from what you'll see on the video.
I ordered on eBay THE RIGHT ONE and it worked the first time !!!!!
RS232 NULL CABLE !!!!!!!!!!!!
I bet 100s of people out there whos threads i was reading have the same problem...and they don't know it.
Thanks for this thread..if i paid more attention to details i would have sort this problem earlier.

I need to unbrick my F5 but what firmware do I need. Do i just download the latest or first an earlier version and then update it? Thanks btw for the manual
 
I have a Skybox F5 and it broken at first 15 minutes. I did a null cable with these configuration: 2-3, 3-2, 5-5 and now my SB F5 appears to be a clone. Oh gosh! I will keep trying.

Ive download the clone software as i was getting the wrong file off the skybox download.. Ive now extracted it and i haven't got the right program to open the abs file can someone please tell me what to use. thanks

There's no need to open it. You use the EromUpgrade program to flash the .abs file to your box.

The link is at the bottom of the first post (Upgrade_PVR800_HD_Tool).
