Setting up a VPN, Asus n66u??

Hi all,

Im trying to set up a vpn at router level on my asus router, not sure what im doing wrong.

Managed to flash DD-WRT fine. I've bought a VPN from PIA but this is where im stuck. I've followed the video tutorial step by step and it isn't connecting. On the DD-WRT Conrol panel i've had to change my connection type to PPEoP so i was able to enter my ISP's details to connect to the internet, Would this cause any problems?

I'm not quite sure what i'm doing wrong,

Thank for any help

No need to flash for router. PIA integrates with the native VPN client flawlessly. Just import your .ovpn and CA and away you go.

Right so i've sort of manage to set it up, I've flashed the merlins FW...... At first i got it working by going to the PPTP/L2PT Client tab and entering my info in the seemed much easier only had to enter like 5 things. when i ran it my speeds dropped from 70mpbs to around 30mpbs is this normal?

I did get the OpenVPN Client working using this guide https://vpntips.com/vpn-router-install/ but when i ran it my speeds went down to 2mpbs so something had gone marjorly wrong haha.

Thanks again.

Yes that's normal. It's important to distinguish between VPN types. PPTP/L2TP isnt encrypted (it's just a private tunnel between you and the server) OpenVPN is a secure VPN meaning it's encrypted between you and the server. The encryption/decryption overhead has performance implications. Bottom line is all VPNs have an effect on performance, just some more than others. Hope this helps

Ahh right i undestand now thanks for clearing that up, Was wondering why there was a massive speed difference but that makes sense why now.

Thanks
