The United manager’s remarks came as he expressed sympathy with Ireland over Martin Hansson’s failure to spot a handball by Thierry Henry in the lead up to the goal that secured France’s passage through to the World Cup finals in South Africa next summer

“My thoughts were with [Giovanni] Trappatoni [the Ireland manager] I must admit, that was my main thought,” Ferguson said.
He prepared the team and got an absolutely magnificent performance from them. You couldn’t have asked for better from a coach and it’s taken away from him but it happens. It’s denied a couple of our players that great experience of playing in a World Cup finals. (y)
