Sky in Spain now needing VPN

I spend some of my time working a book in a bar in the Canaries and recently everything but the FTA channels went off on the box we were using. I believe its been sourced from a company in IE. The main guy that has the monopoly here for all things Sky related said the only way to get it back was to use a VPN router and that Racing TV now needs a pin code entered into the settings every time you want to turn that channel on. Could anyone shed some light on this for me - if that is the only solution, firstly, and what options there are besides, if any.

Genuine Sky HD box, no mods to it, card provided from Ireland (I think skycards.eu? not my account so not 100% but name rings a bell)

No, old style Sky HD box

Thats quite literally what Im trying to ask here. I want to know why it needs to connect through a VPN. Something to do with the internet connection and the card needing paired up every time it turns on now perhaps?

Thats usually for on demand and catch up only I thought?

Apparently not in this case. Any and all channels that dont come FTA (Sky News, SSN, etc) all displayed the notice to purchase the channel, but the account had it all active. The VPN router was plugged in and things started to work again apparently, but now every time we want to watch RacingTV, we need to enter a pin code to activate it. Never heard of anything like it before.

No its not that, the box is 2 years old and we have been watching it perfectly fine until this last week swapping between Sky Racing and Racing TV on demand. Its something new thats come into effect cos we are in Spain, hence the VPN to make the server think we are in the UK still, but not sure what the point of it all is and why the pin code is now on there, but its 100% not a parental control.

As you are abroad and the racing tv on demand is linked to your sky card, sky have now twigged you are not in uk or ireland and blocked access. Sky no longer support the SKy HD box and want to phase them out in favour of sky q. Whoever setup the VPN at your end must have been asked to provide a PIN for added security. Proton VPN use a pin and if you say the VPN provider I can do a further check. For me I would sue NORDVPN.

You can watch racing tv abroad using their website and mobile apps.

Manic the paid channels are OK and tv racing on demand is ok, the bugbear is having to enter the pin code to connect to VPN, so switching is a pain. Its in a bar!!
