SKYBOX F5S - wont connect to the internet

Hi folks,

Really need a bit of help here. I set up a skybox f5s for my mate a few weeks ago and everything was perfect, he has given it back saying most of the channels no longer work. I ahve looked at it and it will not connect to the internet.. I have it here now and I have re downloaded firmware but the line is still offline. I have tried my own personal line which will not work. This is quite frustrating and I do not know what to do next, could i get some help please!

By the way the channels that do not need an internet connection work fine i.e BBC, ITV, etc. All the other channels show up scrambled due to not having an internet connect, the dsl cable connected to the box is the one I use currently and the network setting set on Ethernet. I know the box will not connect to the internet as I have also tried to update the 7 day EPG which has failed.

When I press info on the remote when on a channel that isnt working the date and time just have question marks so it looks like ??:?? and ??:??:??
SUBT, TTX, EPG are all shaded green and there is no other icons like AC3 and H.264, there is 'No information' for what is on at the moment and the LNB is 0%. SNR is around 75%.

Does anyone have any suggestion on what I should try to do? :beg:

Try going into network settings, wired, setup and turn DHCP off, save, exit and go back in and turn DHCP back on, save and exit, make sure no fixed IP address, HTH.

No it works on my own box. This is from a mates house and I am having the same problems he was having with it. So same problem two different households. He was using it for about 3 weeks..

@The reaper - Did you read my post or just link me to that thread?

Is the light on at the back of the box at the Ethernet port when the cable is plugged in ?

If not it could be a fault on the box rather than a cabling / setup issue.

Yes Mr F, I read your post but it's always worth referring to that link first so as to cover all basic faults.

Yes it is a fault with the box. The light is not on at the ethernet port, is there anyway of fixing this fault manually without having to send the box back to China or Hong Kong or wherever it came from.

I don't use them but google "skybox F5S wireless dongle" and loads come up.....type it into ebay, loads.

Cheers mate. If anyone has any other suggestions let me know as my mate would like to be connected to the box using a wired connection, thanks.

Unplug it from the wall first...! Open up the box and have a look inside.. A ribbon cable around Ethernet may have come loose as box sounds like it has been doing some mileage.. ! And as for sending it back to China/Taiwan..!! It would be cheaper to buy a new box..!!

There aren't any ribbon cables in the F5s. Everything is soldered directly to the board.

If you want to try a wifi dongle, then it will need to be one that uses the Ralink RT5370. This cheap one from Ebay works. I tried it myself for a while:-

WIFI 150MBPS WIRELESS ADAPTOR 802.11 B G N LAN NETWORK MINI USB DONGLE ADAPTER | eBay

I wish I would have read this post before I opened it up! Thanks for your help Kremmen, does that one work as well as some of the more expensive ones I have been looking at like: - USB Wifi Dongle Skybox Openbox F3S F4S F5S F3 F4 F5 F6 X4 X5 RT5370 150Mbps | eBay OR Original Skybox USB Wifi Adapter Dongle FOR Skybox M3 F3 F5 F3S F5S Openbox X5 | eBay Or should I just go and buy the one you suggested and save myself a buck?

I don't have one of the other types to compare it to, but all I can say is, I used the one I linked to in my box for a few days without any problems. It worked just as well as my hard wired ethernet cable.

However, having said that, a lot of members say that they have problems with any kind of wifi dongle.
