Skybox with Gift Or Go it alone?

Thinking of binning off Sky, I do not use it enough for the cost. I mainly use XBMC for movies and catching up on TV series.

But i would like more than just the freeview channels, Having a youngster around, I would like to keep all the kids channels etc.

Been looking at the Skybox F5s. Should i buy one with a "free" gift or best going it alone and buy the box on its own and looking elsewhere for the pay for server?

thanks

First time looking at this type of thing, so any advice welcome, While I am not a technical expert, I can generally find way around things.

Buy a box and line separately

Don't go to Ebay and buy the cheapest it will probably be a clone.

Pay an extra fiver and get a genuine box.

Post a request for a server here

Some kind soul will send you some info by a PM

Happy hunting (y)

They are all pretty much the same in terms of function.

the F5 types are a bit neater and smaller.

If you try to update the firmware on a clone box you may find yourself here

The null modem cable will cost you close to a fiver lol

Cheers will make sure i buy an original then. Is there a way to tell them apart?

What is a typical price to pay for the server?

You can't tell by looking at them as they are clones ROFL

But usually they are on Ebay a few quid cheaper than genuine boxes.

It's the same with servers really, if you go too cheap you get glitchy viewing,
most gifts tend to be at the cheap end, so you are just wasting your money, go with a recommended
server from here.

Get a few test lines from different ones until you find one your happy with.
Your probably looking at anywhere between £50 - £100 per year, but you generally
get what you pay for.

Thanks for you reply again Bees. Think I can live with £50-£100.

I terms of set up when doing it yourself, is there any guides on here?

Just about to cancel my subscription now, and buy a box.
